The University welcomes undergraduate applications from students studying the Access to Higher Education Diploma, provided that relevant subject content and learning outcomes are met. We are not able to accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas as a general qualification for every undergraduate degree course.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

A minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) English or Welsh is a requirement for entry to all our degree schemes. Level 3 KS/FS Communication may be acceptable in lieu of GCSE English or Welsh. For this degree scheme minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics is also required. GCSE Mathematics-Numeracy is acceptable in lieu of GCSE Mathematics.

Mathematics is essential for an understanding of modern Economics. A degree combining these two strongly-related disciplines at Aberystwyth University gives you the opportunity to study and understand economics and mathematics at depth and will enable you to acquire the technical aptitude and analytical skills to proceed to a successful career in finance, business and many other fields, or to proceed to further study.

As a Mathematics and Economics student in Aberystwyth, you will be taught the essential disciplines of algebra, calculus, mathematical analysis and statistics. The Economics element of this course will enable you to discover the economic issues that impact on every-day life including the creation of employment, inflationary pressures, international trade issues, the process of business competition, innovation and growth, the development of third world countries, the protection of natural resources and government policy-making and provide you with a thorough grounding in Econometrics.

**What will I learn?**

In your first year you will explore topics in: Algebra and calculus; Economic principles; Probability and statistics; Mathematical analysis.

In your second and third years you will be able to choose from a range of modules on topics which might include: Partial differential equations; Linear Algebra; Applied Statistics; Stochastic Models in Finance; Taxation; Development of Economics; Policy implications of economic theory; Econometrics; Macroeconomic behaviour and systems; Statistical modelling and mechanics; Development Economics; Economics of labour and industrial relations; International Trade and Trade Policy.

This degree is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practicals.You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, presentations, reports and examinations. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.

This is a degree in demand, as business increasingly needs workers who can examine and explain complex data. And yet the number of economics graduates fell by nearly 10% last year, which means demand is even greater. As so many economic grads go into banking and finance, it's not surprising that over half of all 2015's economics graduates who did go into work were working in London. And don't think it's just the finance industry that's interested in these graduates - there's a significant number who enter the IT industry to work with data as analysts and consultants. It's quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy and management consultancy which may require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications - so don’t assume you won’t have to take any more exams once you leave uni. And the incentive to take them, of course, is better pay, which will be on top of an already healthy average starting salary of over £30,000 for graduates working in the capital.
