This is a real Business, marketing and management personal statement written by a student for their university application to Leeds and Durham. It has been carefully edited into the new three-question format, with all of the original wording kept. It may have strengths and weaknesses, but it can be used as inspiration for writing your own UCAS personal statement. Ensure your personal statement is entirely your own work, copying from this example or other sources is considered plagiarism and can affect your application. There are lots more examples in our collection of sample personal statements.
My dream as a teenager was to become a copywriter. I imagined myself staring out the window trying to come up with a great idea for the “next project”. That next project was usually the dreadful TV ad that I didn’t like and needed to be improved. Those daydreams led to a scrapbook that has kept me going till today.
I have grown up now and so have my dreams. The little copywriter in me insists to become a brand manager now. I have been planning and preparing for this master course for the past two years. I have spent my leisure time reading Philip Kotler and Jim Collins books, listening to podcasts such as Marketing on the edge and Harvard Business IdeaCast. Pursuing a career in marketing where I get the opportunity to deal with fun and challenging tasks has always been my ultimate goal. I urge to solve problems, organise and lead in this creative industry.
I see two possible career pathways in front of me. The first one is to work for the healthcare division of companies manufacturing diagnostic imaging devices, such as GE, Philips and Siemens. This one gives me the possibility to take advantage of my bachelor’s degree and put the knowledge into use. The other one which is more appealing is to work for companies with larger and varied range of products like P&G, L’Oreal and Mars. The products are more fun to work with and the challenges are more difficult since the items have to appeal to taste of a larger group of people.
The reason I’m applying to your institution is that it seems to be the one of the few that covers the aspects of marketing which suits a brand manager best. Modules such as Buyer Behaviour and Business Economics and Accounting are either not offered by other institutions or if they are as electives, it will be at the cost of giving up other important modules.
Unfortunately a one year diploma course in copy writing was unthinkable for my researcher parents as everyone in the family and relatives has at least a master’s degree. After 2 years of pointless struggling I ended up at Karolinska, studying medical imaging which is fun for the moment but is not something that I wish to do for the rest of my life.

I’m looking forward to a fun and instructive study year at X.
This feedback is AI-generated, based on the text of this personal statement:
This personal statement effectively conveys the applicant's evolving passion for marketing and brand management, linking early aspirations to current goals and careful preparation. To improve, the applicant could clarify their motivations more explicitly in the first section, detail more specific skills or academic achievements relevant to marketing in the second section, and expand the third section by highlighting extracurricular or practical experiences beyond reading and listening to podcasts. Avoiding vague phrases like "fun and challenging tasks" and replacing them with concrete examples or reflections would strengthen the statement. Including more specifics about what makes the chosen course unique, beyond module titles, would also enhance personalization.
The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025. This personal statement was submitted before then, using the old essay-style format. It has been carefully edited into the three-question format, with all of the original wording kept.
