Why do you want to study this course or subject?

I have chosen to study a course in Computing at University as it will allow me to progress towards a technical career in this industry as I believe it would give me the knowledge needed to work in the IT job market and it would help me improve my IT skills even further. I find the course materials interesting such as learning more practical skills for Computing through projects and learn about businesses involved in this industry and it would allow me to use my research skills and business planning skills that I developed on my course and it allow me to have a successful career in this industry as technology worldwide has expanded and advanced over the years and the technology has become an essential for businesses.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

I studied Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Business and BTEC Level 3 Cert in IT. In my Level 3 BTEC business course I have learned about the different types of businesses and forms of ownership, the processes involved in marketing such as branding the products, market research and different forms of advertising. The accounting unit focused on cash flow, profit and loss accounts and balance sheets, which involved me writing evaluative reports about the significance of these documents, so my finance skills have developed strongly. In my IT course, I learnt about communication and employment skills that are used in the IT industry and I have got a good understanding of the different computer systems that would be used by IT professionals gained through extensive research completed for the computer systems unit. I also completed a web design unit which involved learning how to create websites and did units on database that involved learning database design in great depth through Microsoft Access and the E-Commerce unit helped me have a better understanding on internet businesses, overall I enjoyed the IT course greatly. As part of the IT course, I took part in a visit to Symmetry medical which is a large public limited company that specialises in making medical equipment for hospitals and medical related businesses and I was given a detailed tour of how they operate such as the production for their products showing each stage involved in the process which included the use of computers when they was designing their products, what each department does and the different job roles. This greatly helped increased my knowledge of how a major business operates on a daily basis and how crucial computers are for businesses.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

I took part in a work experience placement at school, working as administrator and I learned various office skills, such as how to use different types of office equipment like photocopier, binder and laminator. I also learned about the different health and safety hazards in workplaces and how to prevent them and had to create a database to store information for mail merging to send letters to different business customers and had to answer telephone calls and deal with customer enquires which helped increase my confidence and organisational skills as a result and also I gained a Level 1 NVQ in Business. My hobbies and interests include going to the gym to workout as I enjoy being active and keeping fit and healthy. I was an active member of the student council at college which was an important role as I was representing the views and interests of fellow students. The role involved collecting information by listening to students and relaying this information to college managers during the meetings. I would also make suggestions of how to improve the college. Measures successfully adopted include increasing printing credit and updating some of the computer systems. I have also improved on my listening and communication skills from being a member of the student council. I enjoy learning new information every day and if I was accepted onto the course then I would bring lots of enthusiasm and hard work in my time at university.

The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025. This personal statement was submitted before then, using the old essay-style format. It has been carefully edited into the three-question format, with all of the original wording kept.
