In the past two years, I have been studying networking at . I have always been excited by computing, and this course has allowed me to expand my knowledge, within this specific field. The networking sector of the IT industry has interested me a lot. I understand how subnetting works, and how to initially configure Cisco routers. I have experience of using packet tracer, where a physical connection to a router is not available. A lot of the material is online, which means that the work can be accessed outside college, and in my own time. I have also visited the Museum of Science and Industry, which has really inspired me to continue with networking by showing how technology has been innovated since the 1800s.
As my thirst for knowledge grows, I would like to go to university in order to complete CCNA and CCNP qualifications, as well as later pursuing a master's and a PhD. I have visited the campus at one of the open days and immediately felt welcome. I was delighted that the university also offers a four-year sandwich course, which means I can gain industry experience before finishing my final year to graduate.
I have already achieved a distinction in CCNA Discovery one, and it was one of my favourite modules on the course. Prior to coming to college, I already had experience with computers, as I spent time during my school years on forums where I learnt how computers behave. This meant that I could subsequently repair my own computer whenever a fault occurred. This also means that I am able to identify problems with computers and their solutions.
I have developed good time management skills, always handing assignments on time. As I have been travelling to study since the age of eleven, I have built this skill to be punctual for my studies. I am able to communicate clearly and concisely in English, and I also speak a low level of Mirpuri Punjabi as well as being able to read Arabic. I know a very short amount of Arabic words that I can translate into English.
My overall qualification classification is ND Networking BTEC - DDD, with detailed grades in various modules including Computer Systems (D), Communication Technologies (D), Principles of Computer Networks (D), Mathematics for IT Practitioners (M), Cisco Discovery 1 (D), and Network Management (D), among others.
I spend some of my time volunteering at a relative's local clothes shop, where I have grown confidence and gained a good rapport with customers. I am also a student representative, acting as a go-between to discuss problems and participate as part of the collective student voice on issues affecting our college. Furthermore, I am part of the “Aimhigher” group, where I have researched different higher education courses and decided which course suits me best.
In my spare time, I enjoy going to the cinemas to watch new movies and visiting the local gym for cardiovascular exercise. At the gym, I make new friends and socialise. Repairing computers is a hobby, which means I spend some of my time on forums.
I am a very enthusiastic person and always willing to take on new challenges to reach my full potential. After university, I hope to achieve CCNA and CCNP qualifications to prepare me for my working life within the industry.
I ended up firming my offer at Staffordshire University. I originally applied as a result of college lecturers telling me how good it was in terms of having industry links, though to be honest Sheffield Hallam, Birmingham City University and Staffordshire all have great industry links. At the time I wrote my personal statement, Birmingham City University did not incorporate the CCNP course into their undergraduate course, so even though it is the "main" Cisco academy, I ended up going to Staffordshire due to a heavier workload in undergrad. They also have quite a lot of equipment at Staffordshire now, it seems.
Comments on the statement: Looking back, it obviously got me into university, but I don't think it really needed to mention anything about "knowing a very short amount of words in Arabic." It would be preferable to simply say "I am also learning Arabic in my spare time."
This feedback is AI-generated, based on the text of this personal statement:
This personal statement effectively conveys a strong enthusiasm for IT networking and clearly outlines relevant experiences and qualifications. The applicant demonstrates a good understanding of the subject and shows clear goals for further study and career development. To improve, the candidate could enhance the flow by reducing minor repetitions (such as mentioning computer forums multiple times) and clarifying language around language skills to sound more confident and focused (e.g., describing Arabic study more positively). Including more detail on how specific skills connect to the course would also strengthen the statement. Overall, it is well-structured for the new UCAS personal statement format and maintains an authentic voice.
The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025. This personal statement was submitted before then, using the old essay-style format. It has been carefully edited into the three-question format, with all of the original wording kept.
