Personal Statement - Teaching 2

This is a real Education and teaching personal statement written by a student for their university application. It has been carefully edited into the new three-question format, with all of the original wording kept. It may have strengths and weaknesses, but it can be used as inspiration for writing your own UCAS personal statement. Ensure your personal statement is entirely your own work, copying from this example or other sources is considered plagiarism and can affect your application. There are lots more examples in our collection of sample personal statements.

Why do you want to study this course or subject?

Sport has always been a huge part of my life ever since I started playing competitive football at the age of nine. Playing for successful teams at club level and having a short stint at Saint ********* FC has allowed me to play under quality managers and obtain valuable coaching knowledge and learn from experience.

I have chosen to do a sports orientated course as performing sport has always given me the highest satisfaction and ever since I can remember I have been envious of sports coaches and physical education teachers knowing when I grew up this is also what I wanted to do with my life.

Sport has so much to offer young and old alike. I hope that by qualifying in the field of sport coaching I can put something back into the system.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

Throughout my football career my leadership qualities have been recognised and commended by my managers, resulting in captaincy at all the clubs I've been attached to. My approach is determined and I try to lead by example and encouragement. At present I am captain of **** ****** High school U18's and ******** Amateurs.

Being given the chance to be a prefect and house captain of Douglas has also given me a valuable insight to taking responsibility for others which I see as being vital skill when teaching people.

I am sure that being able to handle the pressure of a university course is one of the major factors in achieving success. My ability to handle pressure has grown considerably over the past seven months not least through my experience of working as a Commis chef. Having to work in an intense environment with trained professionals has given me a valuable insight into working life and having to handle the strains of maintaining a high pressure job. Hopefully this will also stand me in good stead for the pressures of a university degree.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

In order to get a flavour of teaching first hand I have arranged a community placement within the P.E department of the school assisting the teachers in demonstrations, observations and absorbing valuable skills from persons of experience.

AI generated feedback

This feedback is AI-generated, based on the text of this personal statement:

  • The personal statement effectively demonstrates a strong passion and longstanding commitment to sports and coaching, which aligns well with a sports-oriented teaching course.
  • Including specific examples of leadership and responsibility roles strengthens the applicant’s suitability for teaching and coaching professions.
  • The mention of a community placement provides practical experience supporting readiness for the course.
  • To improve, the applicant could expand on how their qualifications specifically prepare them academically for the university course.
  • Adding reflective insights on what was learned during the community placement and how it shaped their desire to teach could add depth.
  • Clarify or anonymize placeholders (e.g., "Saint ********* FC") if submitting for official use.
  • Consider formatting the statement into clear paragraphs under the new Ucas questions to improve readability and structure as per 2026 requirements.

How personal statements have changed?

The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025. This personal statement was submitted before then, using the old essay-style format. It has been carefully edited into the three-question format, with all of the original wording kept.
