Why do so many people disobey the law? It is such a huge part of everyday life, yet many people still ignore it despite the law being there in order for society to be shaped into a nicer place to live in. My interest in law and criminology has grown over the years after researching the content of the courses available as well as reading specialised books and talking to current students. Criminology and family law are topics which interest me greatly. A career in criminal and family law would be challenging and stimulating and is a hope for the future after university.
Beginning university is a thrilling prospect and I am looking forward to the opportunities it will bring. A change of setting, discovering new people and new places will push my independence further. I am sure it will be a new and fulfilling experience.
Progressing onto college before university has allowed my confidence to grow, given me more independence and studying in a more mature environment I feel has been good preparation. I have always enjoyed essay writing and analysis and I am glad to be using those skills regularly in the Higher courses as this will be a vital part of the law and criminology. The Higher course has aided the development of skills which I also feel will be of relevance. Each of these subjects requires good time management skills and dedication.
I am a very caring and understanding person towards others. This part of my nature is strengthened through living with and babysitting my two younger sisters; one of which has autism and physical disabilities and is unable to care fully for herself. Last year, I volunteered as a Buddy and Book Buddy which helped to extend my patience and understanding as well as my communication skills while working with other people. Both responsibilities required full commitment, cooperation and hard work.
Achieving the role of Prefect last year further enhanced my organisational and team working skills. I was pleased to be able to contribute and make a difference to the school. My duties included preparing for events held within the school during and after school time, assisting teachers when required, addressing the public regarding school issues and setting a good example for the younger year groups in the school. I also became a class representative for college which has given me the opportunity to carry on using these skills which I consider to be useful if in a law career.
I have worked at the local hotel taking care of a number of domestic duties and dealing with the public. I recently obtained a summer job as bar staff. This has increased my confidence and communication skills and has taught me how to work with many different people and stay calm under pressure. Judgement and working with the licensing laws are essential when dealing with customers who appear under 18 or are difficult to work with. Earning my own income has given me some independence which is good preparation for university and life thereafter.
Visiting art galleries and museums in my free time is relaxing and inspiring and has increased my interest in travelling, visiting new places and taking on new challenges.
This feedback is AI-generated, based on the text of this personal statement:
This personal statement effectively communicates a genuine passion for law and criminology, combining academic preparation with valuable personal and work experiences. To enhance it further, consider explicitly linking each experience back to skills or qualities relevant to studying law, such as critical thinking, ethics, or communication, to strengthen the connection for admissions tutors. Expanding on specific examples of course content or books that inspired the applicant could add depth to the motivation. Also, a clearer conclusion that summarizes readiness and enthusiasm for university study would improve coherence. Overall, it presents a well-rounded candidate with strong interpersonal skills and readiness for the challenges of university.
The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025. This personal statement was submitted before then, using the old essay-style format. It has been carefully edited into the three-question format, with all of the original wording kept.
