Why do you want to study this course or subject?

I have had a strong interest in science, particularly biology and chemistry, throughout my education, which has inspired me to pursue a career in pharmacy. Growing up, I frequently accompanied my father to the local pharmacy and spent a lot of time observing the pharmacist at work. This early exposure gave me a real insight into the practical applications of science in healthcare and ignited my desire to work in this field. I researched the pharmacy profession extensively to better understand the role and its impact on community health. I am particularly fascinated by the opportunity to work with pharmaceuticals and contribute to the treatment and well-being of patients. The evolving nature of pharmacy, especially with new drug developments and advancements, motivates me to be part of this dynamic profession. My ambition is to either own or work in a large pharmacy where I can contribute meaningfully to public health and possibly be involved in innovative drug therapy management.

Furthermore, I am attracted to pharmacy because it combines my passion for science with the chance to engage with and help people directly. I believe that effective communication and trust are vital in healthcare, and I am keen to develop these qualities to serve my community better.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

I am currently studying three A levels in chemistry, biology, and Information Technology, along with an additional AS level in sociology. These subjects have deepened my understanding of scientific principles, analytical techniques, and data handling, all of which are essential foundations for pharmacy. Chemistry and biology particularly support my knowledge of the human body, drug interactions, and chemical compounds.

Throughout my education, I have developed strong enquiry and analytical skills that enable me to approach problems methodically and accurately. My experience with technical equipment and information technology complements these abilities by enhancing my attention to detail and technical proficiency.

In addition to academic qualifications, my current role at O2, where I work as a contractor responsible for making critical decisions regarding customer contracts, has improved my decision-making, responsibility, and communication skills under pressure. This experience requires me to be focused and meticulous, qualities that are crucial in pharmacy where precision and reliability can affect patient outcomes.

I am also proud to be in a position to receive the chemistry award for achievement from my year group, which reflects my academic dedication and excellence in a key subject related to pharmacy.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Beyond formal education, I have gained valuable experience through various work placements and volunteering roles that have prepared me for the challenges of a pharmacy career. I have completed multiple work experiences at my local pharmacy, where I assisted with general procedures and observed daily operations. This has strengthened my understanding of how pharmacies function and the importance of accuracy and customer care.

At my local community centre, I volunteered extensively, gaining skills in word processing, database management, and spreadsheet creation. These technical abilities support strong organisational skills, beneficial for managing pharmacy records and schedules.

More recently, I began volunteering at an old people’s home near my house, where I assist management with organising schedules and helping residents. This role has enhanced my empathy, patience, and communication skills, all critical attributes for a healthcare professional.

In addition, I have taken on leadership responsibilities, serving as a form representative for two years and currently undertaking an extracurricular qualification in counselling. I also plan to participate in a first aid course to further develop my practical healthcare skills.

Outside of these roles, I actively participate in sports and am involved in my college society, which have helped me build teamwork, commitment, and time management skills. These experiences, combined with my academic background and work placements, give me a solid foundation to pursue pharmacy with confidence and enthusiasm.

Expert feedback from The Student Room personal statement reviewer

The original statement includes reviewer comments highlighting repetitive statements, incoherent phrasing, spelling errors, vague generalities, and a lack of detailed examples or personal reflection. It also advises avoiding overused phrases like "as a child," improving sentence flow and punctuation, and providing more specific and relevant examples, especially regarding pharmacy experience. The commenter suggests showing stronger personal passion and creativity to stand out, as well as correcting spelling mistakes and improving vocabulary variety.

AI generated feedback

This feedback is AI-generated, based on the text of this personal statement:

This personal statement demonstrates a clear motivation for studying pharmacy and relates the applicant's academic background and work experience to the course. The early pharmacy exposure and research show genuine interest. However, the original writing suffered from repetition, grammar, and coherence issues that have been clarified in this reformat. To further strengthen the statement, the applicant could include more specific examples of challenges faced, insights gained from volunteering or work placements, and explicit connections between skills developed and their relevance to pharmacy. Using varied vocabulary and demonstrating personal growth through experiences would also enhance impact. Clearer expression of ambitions within the profession and reflection on what makes pharmacy uniquely appealing to them would make this statement more memorable for admissions staff in the new UCAS personal statement format.

How personal statements have changed?

The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025. This personal statement was submitted before then, using the old essay-style format. It has been carefully edited into the three-question format, with all of the original wording kept.
