Personal Statement:Pharmacy 17

This is a real Pharmacy personal statement written by a student for their university application. It has been carefully edited into the new three-question format, with all of the original wording kept. It may have strengths and weaknesses, but it can be used as inspiration for writing your own UCAS personal statement. Ensure your personal statement is entirely your own work, copying from this example or other sources is considered plagiarism and can affect your application. Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My preferred choice of course is Pharmacy and I would greatly desire to be involved in the science industry. I am very intrigued by how the medicine and pharmaceutical industry works. It is this that has driven me to partake in research of the course. In University, I would like to enhance my scientific knowledge; it is the reason why I am applying for courses that are all within a science related background.

I enjoy the way the scientific industry is always changing with crucial discoveries happening every day. This will keep me interested in science until the day of my retirement. I myself have aspired to eventually run a community pharmacy. I am also equally interested in becoming a biochemist and working within a hospital environment, I find a great sense of wellbeing when the work I do has benefited someone who is in need of it.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

During my time at school, I have achieved strong academic results demonstrated by my performance at GCSE and AS-Level. These grades show that I am intelligent and well-prepared academically, which is essential in Pharmacy. A pharmacist must be ready to give the best advice at crucial times, and similarly, in lab research, if something goes wrong, the chemist has to be able to recall emergency protocol.

I spent a duration of time conducting work experience in ********'s Chemist, a community pharmacy within *******, where I worked alongside a pre-registration student. I used many different technologies whilst there, including an automated pill counter and a program called 'Pharmacy Manager'. This experience allowed me to see my subjects of Chemistry and Biology being applied in the real world, such as when I made up solutions of medicine requiring precise measurements. I also noticed how much ICT is used within Pharmacy; my learning of Applied ICT helped me in this aspect of the work experience.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Outside of education, I have developed many skills and experiences that prepare me well for this course. At school, I am an elected prefect, a role that shows I am trustworthy and dependable among my peers and staff members. The senior prefect role involves ensuring the smooth running of the school by carrying out specific duties. I have helped at my school's open day every year, a responsibility requiring that the school is represented as best as possible. Additionally, I took part last year in the 'sponsor a child' campaign, demonstrating my charitable and caring nature by donating a small sum monthly to improve a child's quality of life.

I have an interest in swimming and was a competitive member of ********* Swimming Club for a year. I competed in relays which promoted teamwork and dedication—qualities that are very beneficial in the scientific industry. Furthermore, I am a registered blood donor and donate blood four times a year, showing my generosity toward those in need.

Additionally, avoiding vague phrases and expanding on certain points, such as what was learned during work experience, would enhance impact. Overall, the statement is sincere and well-rounded for the new UCAS personal statement format.

How personal statements have changed?

The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025.
