Personal Statement:Pharmacy 2

This is a real Pharmacy personal statement written by a student for their university application. It has been carefully edited into the new three-question format, with all of the original wording kept. It may have strengths and weaknesses, but it can be used as inspiration for writing your own UCAS personal statement. Ensure your personal statement is entirely your own work, copying from this example or other sources is considered plagiarism and can affect your application. There are lots more examples in our collection of sample personal statements.

Why do you want to study this course or subject?

I have always been fascinated by the chemistry of making a variety of different medicines to help improve physical and mental illness. As my mother died of cancer, it has been my desire to involve myself within a field which searches for fatal diseases. I am very passionate about chemistry and biology and it is my belief that the skills I will acquire in this area will offer me better clarity and understanding behind the chemistry of making medicines in university. Due to this I would like to go into a field of pharmacy at university.

I am enthusiastic about my chosen course and really hope I can make a difference.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

In order to gain further knowledge in pharmacy, my work experience was carried out at Wexham Park Hospital in the pharmacy department, where I gained experience in a real everyday work life. My responsibilities included dispensing to different wards around the hospital, making sure the dispersion of the medicine was correct especially for the "A 'n' E" ward. I also had a great pleasure in doing ward rounds with the head of the pharmacy department, from which I learnt a great deal about how patients were approached and how to analyse patient health charts to give them the recommended dosage of any medicine. After this work experience, it confirmed my interest in pharmacy and has furthered my passion for it.

Additionally, I have done a course in web design by NICAS in which I have been credited.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Whenever it has been possible, I have helped out after school on open evenings for the science department and enjoyed giving back something to the school. As well as my love for science, I also enjoy playing many different sports within and out of school. I like playing basketball on a regular basis with my friends outside of school. I also have a weekend job where I work at "Marks and Spencers" and feel that I have developed my skills in working as part of a team. A weekend job also offers me a little bit of independence, by which I can manage the spending of my own money.

I am also currently learning how to play an electric guitar and have been teaching myself alongside a friend and hope to make a band in the near future. I have also taken part in a leadership challenge, which shows I have good communication, team working and leadership qualities.

In my spare time, I like to read books, especially murder mysteries; currently, I am reading a book called Icarus by Russell Andrews. Along with reading books, I also read newspapers to keep up with current affairs all around the world.

As a person, I would say I have learned a great deal during the last couple of years, especially last year when my mother passed away and there was a great deal of grief for the whole family. Such experience has taught me to have a positive outlook on life, to care for people irrespective of who they are, no matter what their culture or background is. I am a keen learner and like to explore new environments.

AI generated feedback

This feedback is AI-generated, based on the text of this personal statement:

This personal statement effectively conveys the applicant's motivation to study pharmacy, with a strong personal reason linked to their mother's illness, which adds genuine passion. The work experience section is detailed and relevant, demonstrating practical insight into the field. Including specific examples such as ward rounds and responsibilities adds credibility.

To improve, the applicant could better organise the statement by linking their qualifications more explicitly to skills needed for the course. The narrative could be enhanced by clearer transitions between points and slightly more focus on academic preparation related to pharmacy. Expanding on how the course aligns with their future goals might strengthen the first section.

The extracurricular activities showcase a well-rounded character but could more directly connect these experiences to attributes needed in pharmacy study and practice, such as communication or leadership. Proofreading to correct minor grammatical issues and improve the flow would also benefit the overall quality.

Overall, this is a heartfelt and promising personal statement well suited for the new UCAS personal statement format from 2026 onwards.

How personal statements have changed?

The current personal statement format, with three 'scaffolding' questions, was introduced by Ucas in September 2025. This personal statement was submitted before then, using the old essay-style format. It has been carefully edited into the three-question format, with all of the original wording kept.
