Nutrition

Our BSc (Hons) Food and Nutrition degree has been designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to evaluate and analyse food in respect of nutrition, quality and safety, as well as protecting and promoting the health of the global population – which can lead to jobs as a nutritionist or food scientist. This course is taught at our recently extended £71 million campus in Edgbaston, Birmingham with state-of-the-art labs and kitchens, where you’ll explore topics such as food science, food safety and food production.

Staff and guest speakers teaching on the course are experts and publish in their respective fields of food science and technology, nutrition and public health, dietetics, food safety and quality, biomedical and biological sciences and analytical chemistry. We partner with a range of food and nutrition companies and several research institutions nationally and internationally, and there are opportunities to undertake placements in the public, food and nutrition sectors as part of a sandwich year.

Upon graduating, you will have a varied array of global employment opportunities. The food and drink industry is the largest industry globally and food science graduates are needed across the food chain from raw material evaluation, manufacturing and processing through to final product analysis. You may go on to work as nutrition scientists to assess dietary requirements and give recommendations to promote healthy eating practices to individuals, industry and regulatory bodies. You could also progress to postgraduate study on programmes such as MSc Dietetics at Birmingham City University.

Assessment methods

Applicants should be aware that qualifications, personal statement, numeracy & literacy tests, interview and references all form part of the selection criteria for this course.  We will also be incorporating the completion of a behavioural styles assessment: the Cambridge Personal Styles Questionnaire (CPSQ) before you are invited to a Selection Day. We are using it alongside the other selection criteria to ensure a fairer and more objective approach to assessing personal readiness for healthcare training.  If your application is successful, we will then be running interviews during January, February, March and April for our September intake
