This exciting undergraduate programme offers students a course of critical historical study with a significant focus on military history. Through a wide-ranging approach to the topic students will explore the scope and development of approaches to war over time. The course will be taught by research-active academics who are experts in the field.

The programme reviews the evidence for conflict from the medieval period through to the present day and will consider a breadth of geographical situations. Although questions of technological advances are important, it is recognized that the study of military history is more than just learning about weapons and battles, to that end the course will support students as they develop an understanding of the wider social, ethical and political contexts of warfare. The programme equips students with a wider range of critical and analytical skills through the in-depth study of the incidence, formation and operation of military institutions and organizational structures in naval, land-based, airborne and civilian contexts.

A number of topics and subjects will be studied such as: medieval warfare, the English Civil War, the history of espionage, the Vietnam War and civil rights, warfare on land and at sea during the 19th century, the ethics of conflict, the 20th century civilian experience of warfare, war in the air, and the Cold War. Students also take a ‘special subject’ study and write a personal research-based dissertation during their final year.

There is no one-size-fits-all method of teaching at BGU – we shape our methods to suit each subject and each group, combining the best aspects of traditional university teaching with innovative techniques to promote student participation and interactivity. You will be taught in a variety of ways, including face-to-face lectures and tutorials, along with the dynamic use of the university’s VLE. Small group seminars and workshops will provide you with an opportunity to review issues raised in lectures, and you will be expected to carry out independent study. Placements are a key part of degree study at BGU. They provide an enriching learning experience for you to apply the skills and knowledge you will gain from your course and, in doing so, give valuable real-world experience to boost your career.

In Military History, a variety of assessment methods are used, which include essays, reports, presentations and written tests. We support you in this work through a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical workshops and a wide range of field visits. History is primarily a written subject and consequently much of the assessment of the course is based on essays and reports. There are a few exams, which often include analysis of provided source material, either text or images. There are also a smaller number of oral presentations and the production of portfolios of research material.

The study of Military History teaches you how to assemble and assess evidence from a wide range of sources – archival and digital, textual and visual. It teaches transferable skills in the analysis of data and the robust construction of arguments using critical reasoning supported by evidence. This course will equip you with a wide range of critical and analytical skills through the in-depth study of the incidence, formation and operation of military institutions and organizational structures in naval, land-based, airborne and civilian contexts. Possible future careers for Military History graduates may include serving as an Armed Forces Officer, Intelligence Officer, within the civil service or security and policing, law and public policy, information research and management, journalism and publishing, or education.

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.
