The purpose of the HND Public Services (Blue Light Services) qualification is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the sector. Upon completion of thhe course you will recieve a HND Public Services Diploma. The HND is designed to support progression into relevant occupational areas or on to degree-level study. We are the only college in the region to offer the Blue Light specialism. This means that whilst the overarching aim of the qualification is a HND in Public Service there is the unique opportunity to specialise in Blue Light Services which would particularly suit those seeking a career in Blue Light Services.

The teaching team have extensive experience of working with large employers in the public services (Blue Light Services) sector and have designed the curriculum and work-based learning to meet the needs of the needs of both these employers and students. This programme will provide education and training for a range of careers in public services, It will provide students with an insight and understanding into the diversity of roles within public services, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels.

Modules

This qualification is delievered over two academic years and cormprises of a number of different modules. You will complete 120 credits per year and this is made up of eight module units some of which are mandatory and some you have a the option to choose.

In the later stages of the course you will also undertake a project in which you will be able to specialise and research an area that is of specific interest to you, in consultation with your course leader.

Assessment methods

During the course you will be assessed by a variety of methods. These include: Reports, Presentations, Case Study Reports, Reflective Portfolios, Examinations, Assignments and a Research Project.

Formative and summative assessments enable lecturers or tutors to monitor the learning that has/is taking place. Summative assessment is not always noticeable by the student as it is a continuous process; lecturers or assessors may observe participation and responses to class discussions and group work, a student’s response to question and answer sessions, participation in workshop practical and engagement with demonstrations. Each module is formally assessed through, for example, examination, open-book test, individual and group presentation, essay, observation of practice, assessment of course work e.g. art portfolio, written report, reflective practice and portfolios of evidence.

Students receive both formal and informal feedback. Formal feedback is through assessments, is usually in writing and given within 3 weeks following the submission date. However, some lecturers will provide group feedback, for example, following an examination they may choose to work through the exam paper in a tutorial. It should be noted that feedback is part of the ongoing learning cycle which is not limited to written feedback. Other forms of feedback include one-to-one meetings with a personal tutor, dissertation and project supervision meetings, a lecturer responding to learner questions or responses during topic or situation discussions.
