This course is one of just a handful at UK universities to offer an exciting blend of both social and biological anthropology, covering topics such as anthropological theory and fieldwork, cultural ecology and human-environment interaction, material culture and technology, human evolution and hands-on laboratory work, all delivered by leading practitioners in their fields. You’ll also select from a portfolio of specialised subjects, allowing you to craft a curriculum that favours your own interests, and career goals.
As well as developing a comprehensive understanding of human diversity and cultural richness, you’ll gain the unique combination of highly transferable analytical, communication and presentation skills that make anthropology graduates highly attractive to a wide range of employers. Within six months of completing their course, 90% of our students who study anthropology courses are working or studying.
Modules
The study of anthropology offers a unique perspective on what it means to be human. While humans from all corners of the globe share the same basic biology, our cultures are remarkably diverse. Many of the practices that we think of as ‘natural’ or biologically given are in fact thought about and performed very differently in different cultures across the world today and in the past. How and why have humans evolved this uniquely ‘bio-cultural’ nature? How have humans and our societies been shaped by our social and ecological relationships with one another and with our environments, and how will this continue in the future? Anthropology has never been more relevant than in today’s multicultural, interconnected and fast-changing world.

Top job areas of graduates
This is a pretty flexible degree and a good one if you want to keep your options open. Just over 1,250 graduates completed anthropology degrees last year, and they were well spread out across a whole range of jobs — many industries have jobs that can be done by anthropology graduates and unlike a lot of degrees, there aren't many jobs we can point to and say ‘graduates from this degree do that job’. Management, marketing, housing and recruitment jobs are the most popular, though, and many graduates go into the education or social care sectors. Graduates are also rather more likely than average to work in London, or to go overseas to work. This is quite a popular subject at postgraduate level, and if you want to go into research, you'll need to think about postgrad study - and it's one of the few where numbers are on the up at the moment.
