Data scientists are in high demand because they can interrogate data and use analytics to find patterns, trends and relationships in data sets. This information can then be used in everything from predicting consumer behaviour to accelerating the development of promising new drugs.

**Why study this subject?**
Data science can be described, in simple terms, as the study of data. The information and their assessment of big data can reveal interpretations and insights that can be utilised in many contexts, such as:
- businesses predicting and capitalising on consumer behaviour

- banking institutions detecting fraud

- investors using a combination of big data and artificial intelligence to make more informed investment choices

- pharmaceutical companies using data analysis to accelerate the development of promising drugs.

**What facilities can I use?**
Our computing facilities are packed with the latest equipment. We regularly upgrade our computer hardware and software, so you have the equipment and facilities to truly excel.

**What will I study?**
This programme will provide you with a strong grounding in the technologies and systems that underpin the secure storage, sharing, analysis and presentation of data in various situations for different purposes.

This will include a broad education in computer architectures, networks, information security, programming, databases, web technology and software engineering.

Data analysis will naturally represent a central theme on the course. Technologies, information systems and different associated components will then be used to transform data into significant information so that stakeholders can report findings and make evidence-based decisions.

The final stage of the programme provides options for different specialisation pathways. Depending upon what has inspired you during your course, and perhaps motivated by future career ambitions, you can potentially select modules that concentrate on either database development, artificial intelligence or cloud computing and network security.

This programme will:
- provide an in-depth understanding of the different dimensions of the field of data science

- equip you with relevant technical skills and experience in the use of different technologies, systems, approaches and methodologies relevant for the secure storage, communication, analysis and presentation of data

- develop your skills and knowledge so you can systematically and critically analyse the different methods and strategies for addressing various data-related problems

- give you an appreciation of professional, moral, legal and ethical issues involved in computing and information technology.

**How will I be taught and assessed?**
This course is offered as a four-year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree.

Lectures, tutorials, seminars and practical sessions will all be appropriately utilised, with a gradual progression from formal teaching towards more student-centred and independent learning, through the levels of the programme.

Assessments are then designed to help you learn and apply relevant knowledge, concepts and skills whilst developing those competencies and characteristics needed to be successful in education and employment.

The Project in your final year represents a major piece of independent research focused on some significant problem, which can be linked to some current business challenge or an idea that will support your own career aspirations.

Information systems courses cover a range of areas, including information design, modelling and the finance industry. How well graduates did made a particular difference in 2015 — computing graduates with good grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, and that’s where over a quarter of graduates started work last year. This is also a good degree to take if you want to follow a technical role in the finance or advertising industry.
