For applicants taking the EPQ qualification, an A in the EPQ can be recognised to lower the entry requirements by a single grade. For example an AAB offer would be “AAB from 3 A levels or ABB from 3 A levels and a grade A in the EPQ”. Please note that any subject specific requirements must be met.

You must have or be working towards English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade B/6 or an equivalent, such as A-levels (if you require a Tier 4 visa, you must ensure your language qualification complies with UKVI requirements) and four GCSEs at grade C/4 including Maths, and one science (from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), or equivalent qualifications (subject and grade).

Join us and study at the only higher education institution in Wales and the only Russell Group University offering a BSc Honours course in Operating Department Practice.
Our programme is accredited by the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Meaning you will be eligible to apply to the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) for registration upon completion and will be able to practice as a registered Operating Department Practitioner.
It’s an exciting, challenging and rewarding career choice. Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) are vital members of a multidisciplinary team. They support patient’s emotional and physical well-being throughout surgery from anaesthetics, through surgery and into recovery.
A career in Operating Department Practice provides opportunities to explore innovation in practice and have the privilege to be part of a team that changes people’s lives. You’ll be taught skills that encompass all three phases of the perioperative journey anaesthetics, surgery and post anaesthetic care. However, although primarily based within the perioperative environment the role can be seen in other areas outside of the operating theatre, where these skills are required or can be adapted to meet other needs.
Our course combines both academic study and clinical placements. Within academic study, not only do you get support from a personal tutor and an innovative team of academics in a close-knit class, you will be supported in our recently refurbished simulation suite to practice and hone your taught skills before going out into practice
Our clinical placements take place throughout Wales; working alongside a dedicated placement mentor, knowledgeable practising professionals and with real patients. Meaning you’ll be more competitive in the employment market throughout Wales and the UK and have a broader insight as to the wide-ranging employment opportunities available to you upon qualification.
After qualifying, most ODPs are primarily based in the operating department, but can also work in areas as diverse as accident and emergency departments, intensive care units, maternity departments and as members of the cardiac arrest team.

· We are the only ODP degree programme in the UK offered at a Russell Group University and in Wales.
· For Home/EU students you have the option to choose a fully funded place on the programme or receive a full NHS bursary for Tuition fees providing you agree to work in Wales for two years after qualifying.
· Cardiff University ranks number 2 in the UK for Health Professions in The Guardian 2018 league tables.
· Clinical placements account for 60% of the programme in 7 out of 8 geographical Health Board areas in a range of settings across Wales, making you competitive in the employment market upon qualification.
· As part of the clinical elective placement in the second year, you will have the opportunity to organise a clinical placement of your choice, perhaps overseas meeting appropriate practice outcomes.
· You’ll have access to clinical skills suites to help develop your skills and scenarios prior to placement experience. These include two functioning simulated operating theatres and a recovery/critical care environment.
· You’ll have the opportunity to gain additional recognised qualifications, including the Acute Life Threatening Events Recognition & Treatment (ALERT) course and the Practical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training (PRMOPT) course.
· All members of our ODP Team at Cardiff University hold a minimum of a Masters degree and are all either registered ODP’s or nurses with theatre qualification. This enables us to provide expert support.
