The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering is a rigorous specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and with a strong work related emphasis. The programme is designed to provide higher-level knowledge skills in electrical electronic engineering and mechanical engineering practice. At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the engineering sector through four core units, including one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. The core units are:

Unit 1: Engineering Design
Unit 2: Engineering Mathematics
Unit 3: Engineering Science
Unit 4: Managing a Professional Engineering Project

Graduates successfully completing the course will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of engineering and develop the practical skills underpinning engineering. They will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately and they will have the qualities of personal responsibility needed for employment. They will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, independent working with growing fault-finding and problem-solving strategies, and organisational awareness. The course works with employers to ensure that content is relevant for local employment needs. The resources available support learners to perfect their hand skills and knowledge of practical application of engineering knowledge, which is a key attraction to local businesses. The area is currently developing greater project-based learning to enhance core soft skills and project management’s skills to meet industry needs. Celebrating the learner achievement in the project showcase has been hugely important in linking students with employers and for students to make a full contribution to solving current engineering problems. This pathway is linked to Professional Body standards (where appropriate) and can provide progression towards professional status or entry to the later stages of an appropriate degree.

At Level 5 students continue to build on the essential skills, knowledge and techniques necessary for all engineers whilst working through a larger number of subject-specific specialist and optional units. The two mandatory core units at Level 5 are:

Unit 34: Research Project
Unit 35: Professional Engineering Management.

This two-year higher education course offers both theoretical and practical units combined with an extensive range of teaching and learning methods that enhance the learners’ knowledge and skill. Learners will develop an in-depth understanding of how to use theory and practice as a professional working in the industry. You will be taught in a nurturing environment with lots of expert support from our experienced and industry qualified tutors. They will teach you through a blend of lectures, guest speakers, seminars, case studies as well as individual and group work.

Special features of this programme include:
You can progress onto a final top-up year and achieve a full degree at our Chichester campus.
Opportunity to tailor your HND through optional units
Small group sizes ensure you get the support you need to succeed

In May every year the college displays student project work to local enterprise groups, employers, universities and the local Gatwick Diamond community as part of Sussex’s STEMfest programme.

STEM building
The college has unveiled plans to build a multi-million pound facility at Crawley College that will put the college at the cutting edge of training delivery in computing. The new building will be home to a suite of modern teaching and interactive spaces, which will be used to integrate the use of technology and STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths) in to its curriculum.

Building work began in January 2020, and the building is set to open to students in 2021.

Modules

The new RQF qualification consists of 8 units. There is a required mix of Mandatory, Specialist and Optional units. You will study your mandatory units in your 1st year and your optional and specialist units in the 2nd year. Mandatory units: Engineering Design, Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Managing a Professional Engineering Project Specialist units: Mechanical Principles, Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines. Optional Units: Production Engineering for Manufacture, Quality and Process Improvement. 2nd year Mandatory units: Research Project, Professional Engineering Management. Specialist Units: Advanced Systems Engineering, Virtual Engineering, Further Mathematics Optional Units: Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Lean Manufacturing

This information comes from the National Student Survey, an annual student survey of final-year students. You can use this to see how satisfied students studying this subject area at this university, are (not the individual course).

This is the percentage of final-year students at this university who were "definitely" or "mostly" satisfied with their course. We've analysed this figure against other universities so you can see whether this is high, medium or low.

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?
