The modules you will study

Subjects studied include: Biomechanics -This module aims to introduce the basic concepts of biomechanics as they relate to human movement and performance in sport and exercise. Students are shown how the basic physical principles underpin performance in sport and exercise, and how such principles can be practically investigated. Practical work considers the general principles of biomechanics related to the successful execution of sports techniques and introduces experimental methodology, data analysis, and statistical analysis for practical analysis of technique. Exercise and Health - Modern perspectives of exercise, fitness and health have drawn on the need to understand the impact of sedentary lifestyles and the prevalence of chronic health conditions in light of societal trends. The aim of this module is to recognise the importance of physical activity and exercise on the overall health of both the individual and in the broader context of the population. Critical awareness will be drawn towards the dose-response relationship between physical activity, morbidity and mortality. Interpersonal and Professional Skills - Modern perspectives of exercise, fitness and health have drawn on the need to understand the impact of sedentary lifestyles and the prevalence of chronic health conditions in light of societal trends. The aim of this module is to recognise the importance of physical activity and exercise on the overall health of both the individual and in the broader context of the population. Critical awareness will be drawn towards the dose-response relationship between physical activity, morbidity and mortality. Physiology of Exercise and Health - This module aims to develop an understanding of the structure and biological organisation of skeletal muscle and the nervous system within the context of sport, health and exercise. Control of skeletal muscle at the chemical, cellular, and tissue level; and the metabolic processes fuelling muscle contraction will be examined. Particular emphasis will be placed on the requirements of high intensity performance, and the subsequent responses. Sport and Execise Psychology - Sport and exercise contexts provide a fascinating and complex opportunity to investigate elements of the psychology of human behaviour. The impact of social psychological factors on the participation in and performance of sport and exercise behaviour is critical for both coaches and performers to understand. Theoretical perspectives and research findings from a number of current areas within the field will provide students with guidance on how behaviour can be shaped in both sporting and physical activity settings. The module content will include material selected from the following: introduction to key concepts in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise situations including motivation for achievement and participation, individual difference characteristics of elite performers, group cohesion and leadership. Research Methods - This module will introduce students to the basic principles and techniques of the research process and form the basis of supporting research in the context of exercise and health science and modules throughout this programme. It aims to introduce students to the philosophies that underpin different forms of research and also to basic techniques of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Completion of this module will enable students to acquire the research skills that underpin the development of their critical thinking. This module will initially focus on why research is valuable within the area of exercise and health. Further details of other modules can be found at the College website; https://www.worthing.ac.uk/sport-exercise-health-science.
