The HNC level 4 qualification in Applied Science: Biology provides an excellent grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required for progressing onto further studies, such as a BSc, or into employment. The modules covered on this course offer a wide variety of subjects extending from molecular and cellular biology to biodiversity. With an emphasis on taught modules, delivered through a diverse range of methods that reflect the diversity of learners' needs and a high level of practical work, students will develop their technical, numerical and analytical skills.

Although the emphasis of career development and employment through this nationally recognised course is clearly in the biological field, it is by no means exclusive as the many skills acquired may be applied to other areas such as commerce, management, teaching etc. Direct progression on to a suitable HND or degree level study, or employment in the biological sciences is also possible.

Students may go on to careers in biomedical diagnostics, nutrition, laboratory analysis, research and development, ecological sciences, conservation, education and many other related areas.

Modules

The course content is based around the subjects of: The Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques, Scientific Data Handling Approaches and Techniques, Cell Biology, Anatomy and Human Physiology, Personal and Professional Development, and Scientific Data.

Assessment methods

Assessment is in accordance with the current Assessment Regulations which operate within the Academic Framework. These are available for students to access via the VLE.
It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with and understand these regulations as they apply to all forms of assessment included in the programme.
Credit can only be awarded for assessed and demonstrated learning in relation to the learning outcomes of each module of study and the achievement of the standard required for award at each level. The methods of assessment to be used include research and presentation, reports and posters. Students will not be assessed by examination.
