About this course

Course option

1year

Full-time | 2024

The BA (Hons) in Art and Design (Top-up) is a one-year course that offers two specialist pathways to choose from: **Fashion** or **Photography**. The course builds on students’ learning from level 5 study.

Each pathway is delivered by its own team of industry-experienced lecturers who guide students in developing a high level of specialist skills, techniques and knowledge.

Students identify and focus on their own area of specialism within their chosen pathway through a mix of advanced research projects, critical writing, and practical assignments and workshops, culminating in a dissertation and a final major practical project.

The creative industries are increasingly dependent on self-employed practitioners and small businesses providing specialist services and products. As such, a key feature of the programme is the focus on professional development and work-related learning, preparing students for employment, self-employment, enterprise, and entrepreneurship.

Modules

Modules studied on the Fashion pathway:
• Specialist Portfolio Project
• Research Project
• Work Based Learning in the Creative Industries
• Project Realisation and Dissertation
• Collaborative Promotion and Brand Identity

Assessment methods

The programme is assessed through the submission of written essays, critical evaluations and logs/blogs, practical assessments, an independently organised public exhibition and a final project or the submission of a dissertation. Formative feedback will support student progression in both written work and practical outcomes. Self and/or peer assessment in convener/critique situations will be an element of all projects and the feedback from these will enhance student achievement and progression. The programme is worth 120 credits at Level 6.
Assessment methods will vary according to the nature of the module and learning outcomes being assessed. Students with identified learning needs may, on the advice of support staff, be given deadline extensions, extra time to complete exams or alternative assessments where appropriate and where the learning outcomes being assessed can be measured fairly. We aim to provide written (and where possible, verbal) feedback within 3 working weeks, and use e-submission (via Turnitin for written assignments) where possible.

It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?
