Early years education

The Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice is a full-time qualification which provides students with the specialist knowledge and skills required within the Early Years sector. It is awarded by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

This level 4/5 qualification has been developed in collaboration with Early Years’ employers, LJMU and other partner colleges.

Work-based learning is a key part of students’ learning. Students will use their workplace, including a chosen mentor and everyday duties, as a key learning resource throughout the programme.

Successful completion of the foundation degree may lead to increased promotion opportunities within the Early Years workforce and may also lead to the ability to work at a level recognised by employers as Senior Practitioner.

Achievement of the Foundation Degree also allows progression to the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies (Top-Up) Level 6 programme at The City of Liverpool College University Centre.

This course is validated by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

Assessment methods

The course comprises of 6 mandatory modules across each level of the two-year programme, there are no optional modules to choose from. The 6 modules equate to 120 credits per year, after both years you will have gained 240 credits to achieve the Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice. Each module requires completion of assessed coursework.

The frequency of assessments tends to be towards the end of the semester; the modules are taught in for example in December/January and March/April.

Students will receive timely, relevant, and constructive feedback on all summative assessed components to enable skills to continue and develop throughout the course, there are also opportunities set to discuss feedback on a one-to-one basis and to receive formative feedback on set tasks across the two years.

The programme aims to provide key knowledge and develop transferable skills, and assessment tasks are developed to put this knowledge into practice and research issues further.
