This degree course aims to develop your expertise in broader-based business management and the more specific function of human resource (HR) management. This course focuses on how every organisation’s success depends on its ability to recruit, motivate and retain high-quality staff.
This course aims to provide you with a distinctive insight into the challenges of managing people at work, and how these can be addressed in a world of fast-paced technological change and increased internationalisation.

* Practice your skills - Develop your business skills through a variety of international case studies, problem-based learning, simulated business and human resources activities in our Business Simulation Suite. The simulation suite is equipped with modern technology, from inter-communication, built-in mics, cameras and the use of virtual reality headsets.
* Real-world exposure - Industry field trips to organisations within a range of sectors and diversified HR functions, past visits include Jaguar Land Rover, Ironbridge, Warwick Castle, Cadbury’s and Coventry City Council. You also can attend events to build your professional network.
* Industry insight and professional network development - Learn from experienced staff, whose consultancy, training and research links with organisations are deep and wide-ranging.
* Lecturers at the forefront of HR developments - Our research-active staff will also share the latest thinking, new developments and specific challenges of a changing work environment. We have lecturers who focus on new ways of working, diversity management, multi-cultural teams, identity, HR professionalisation, the organisation of change and the changing nature of management, social network analysis, shared perceptions, organisational psychology and organisational behaviour.
* Career ready - Upon graduation, you will be well prepared to begin your career in HR or to pursue further professional HRM/HRD qualifications, such as the Advanced CIPD Level 7 or an MA/MSc in Human Resource Management.

This course has a common first year.
The common first year enables you to work alongside students doing similar courses to you, to widen your knowledge and exposure to other subject areas and professions. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with other students, so you can share your insights and experience which will help you to develop and learn.
If you discover an interest in a specific subject you have studied, upon successful completion of your first year, you could swap degrees with another course in your common first year (subject to meeting progression requirements).

Placement Year
There’s no better way to find out what you love doing than trying it out for yourself, which is why a work placement* can often be beneficial. Work placements usually occur between your second and final year of study. They’re a great way to help you explore your potential career path and gain valuable work experience, whilst developing transferable skills for the future.
If you choose to do a work placement year, you will pay a reduced tuition fee* of £1,250. For more information, please go to the fees and funding section. During this time you will receive guidance from your employer or partner institution, along with your assigned academic mentor who will ensure you have the support you need to complete your placement.
Final Year
Year three aims to bring you to the level to enter the world of work by consolidating your knowledge and skills from years one and two. You could also work on a large final project in an area of your interest, with the support of a mentor and your Academic Personal Tutor.

Top job areas of graduates
The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.

Top job areas of graduates
This subject is much more common at postgraduate level, and so be aware that many of the good jobs in HR and personnel management go to graduates with Masters or other postgraduate qualifications in this subject. Work experience for first degree graduates can help to get around the lack of postgraduate qualifications, but if you want to go into management you might find that Masters to be an advantage. Although human resource roles are much the most common outcome for graduates from these courses, they take those jobs in an impressive array of industries so there are plenty of options for the kind of employer you can work for.
