From 3D modeling to project management, Interior Design courses can teach you skills needed for a creative career using your eye for detail.
Most interior design courses consider technical content, understanding of volume and space, light, function and use. What sets our course apart is our user-centred and multidisciplinary approach – spanning retail, domestic, commercial, architectural, transport and marine interiors – to support you in becoming a fully rounded interior design professional.

Our teaching team is made up of dedicated professionals and educationalists who are involved in consultancies or hold directorships in design studios. We’ll show you how to master creative thinking, communicate effectively and stay ahead of the game by monitoring new interior design trends.

A recognised centre of excellence, the department of Industrial Design was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education in 2008 and the Sir Misha Black Award for Innovation in Design Education in 2007.

* Specialist design studios feature individual desk space, presentation equipment, wireless internet access, supported by a dedicated print bureau for 2D outputs up to A0 size and the FAH Art Shop.

* Regular industry lecture series introduces students to specialists and current practitioners – with past presentations from JakStudio, BDP and Scott Brownrigg just to name a few.

* Links with universities in Europe, Asia, China, North and South America provide opportunities to study abroad and gain an international perspective.

Modules

Your main study themes are:

**Interior design exploration**: The technical content of the course will challenge you to develop industry standard skills. You will engage in universal design processes as practised throughout the international design community and develop work using key illustrative and modelling submission methods.

**Professional studies**: We will guide you on your journey to becoming a professional design practitioner. We will encourage autonomous activity in making, drawing, collecting, organising and developing images and other key personal ‘triggers of interest’ in a sketchbook that acts as a log of your work. The sketchbook is intended to be a constant companion and provide a place to note, draw and explore all aspects of design activity taught on the course or initiated in other ways. You will be introduced to the nature of professional practice and you will produce an interesting, individual portfolio of design work. The main outcome will become a ‘passport to the community of practice’ of professional designers.

**3D modelling**: Develops your understanding of 3D presentation skills related to interior architecture and design. You will explore 3D spatial attributes by using surface modelling CAD software, 2D drawings and physical models.

**Design enquiry**: You will critically appraise and focus your own practice and demonstrate your capability to undertake an investigative activity that illustrates the basis for research and key knowledge that underpins the work of design practitioners in their field. Research may include: design practice, theory, management and the context of design, such as historical influence, contemporary practitioners, political and commercial agendas, market trends and analysis, sustainability, brand, technological developments and societal needs.

Want to work in a growing, creative sector where we are a world leader? Welcome to design! The UK has a proud reputation as a centre of design excellence, and last year just over 14,000 design degrees were awarded. At the moment, the jobs market looks a little better for fashion and textile designers, and not as good for multimedia or interactive designers — but that may change by the time you graduate. In general, design graduates are more likely than most to start their career in London, although that also varies by subject — last year fashion designers often found jobs in the North West, graphic designers in the South West, illustrators in the South West, East Anglia and Midlands, textile designers in the Midlands and the North West, and visual designers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands. Design is also a good degree for people who want to work for a small business - more than half of graduates start at a small employer.
