Studying accounting and finance at DMU provides you with the skills and knowledge to embark on a wide range of careers in accounting and finance.
Recent graduates have progressed to careers in positions such as Commercial Finance Analyst at Red Bull, Auditor at KPMG, Cost Technician at PepsiCo, Tax Processor at Grant Thornton and Financial Criminal Analyst at Barclays.
Our high-tech Trading Floor simulates what it is like to work in the financial services industry. It provides access to industry-standard software, including Bloomberg and LSEG Workspace, giving students similar information platforms to those used by leading business, financial and government decision-makers around the globe.
Within the programme, employability skills will be embedded throughout your learning journey. Our close links with employers and major professional accounting bodies will give you opportunities to enhance your career prospects. For example, you could gain exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Certified Practicing Accountants Australia (CPA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA), the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and the Association of International Accountants (AIA).
Students have secured year-long placements in companies such as IBM, Lloyds Banking Group, Ernst & Young and many more.
You could gain up to the maximum of nine exemptions from ACCA exams if you choose the appropriate modules and be exempt from up to the first eight exams with CIMA - a great start towards gaining your professional qualification and developing a wealth of industry knowledge to kick-start your career. Utilise our high-tech Trading Floor. This cutting-edge facility includes access to authentic simulations of financial trading and investing in an ultra-modern environment.
As a member of DMU’s Investment Club you’ll benefit from guest lectures from industry partners such as Mattioli Woods PLC, the chance to earn certifications, and hands-on experience with tools like The London Stock Exchange (LSEG) Portfolio and Trading Simulator.

Structure You will be taught through a combination of large group sessions, tutorials, online resources and self-directed study. Students are given feedback throughout the course to develop and improve their economic and business strategy skills. Through the use of assessments emphasis is placed on research and analytical skills. Assessment may include, but is not limited to, portfolios of learning, online tests, or exams.
Contact hours This is a full-time course. Each module is worth 30 credits. It is expected that student will spend a total of 300 hours of study for each module. You should be prepared to devote approximately 10 contact hours a week to your studies and additional independent hours of study in order to succeed. Teaching is through a mix of lectures, tutorials and seminars.
In addition, each module provides a two-hour surgery each week for individual consultation with the lecturer. You will also have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor and careers and/or subject meetings scheduled throughout the year.
Self-directed study In order to prepare for, and assimilate, the work in lectures and seminars you will be expected to use our on-line resources, participate in flipped or virtual classroom discussions on our virtual learning environment (VLE) and engage in personal study and revision for approximately 25 hours per week.
Block teaching You deserve a positive teaching and learning experience, where you feel part of a supportive and nurturing community. That’s why most students will enjoy an innovative approach to learning using block teaching, where you will study one module at a time. You’ll benefit from regular assessments - rather than lots of exams at the end of the year - and a simple timetable that allows you to engage with your subject and enjoy other aspects of university life such as sports, societies, meeting friends and discovering your new city. By studying with the same peers and tutor for each block, you’ll build friendships and a sense of belonging.

It was Covid, so not really the univeristies' fault. But Leicester made me feel unsafe all the time. It was not uncommon to see loud arguments and fights in public placements or be repeatedly harassed and followed for money in the street. Catcalling was so commonplace no women I knew walked alone.

Cost of living in leicester is relatively cheap. I was charged full fees despite effectively being on placement during my final year.

I accessed autism support, faculty placement services and received some specific support from lecturers which was all of a high standard

Facilities were excellent, computer labs well equipped, would've just been nice to get our subject-specific software on library computers as well as our dedicated studios.

There was more they could've done - particularly with some niche subject-specific knowledge - but given the resources they did have and the existing knowledge of the staff, they did a great job.

De Montfort has a great campus and good student support services. I felt like the quality of teaching on my course was of a good standard. Leicester as a city often feels unsafe when alone.
