Mechanical Engineering MEng (Hons) at De Montfort University includes an additional year on top of the undergraduate degree. By studying the extra year you will gain a deeper understanding of your subject matter and develop many transferable skills to take in the workplace, both in practical and interpersonal areas.

This course provides you with the skills and abilities to help you become a professional engineer; you will study the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about anything that has movable parts. This could be from massive structures like oil platforms, to large jet engines, and single valves. You will also gain a number of analytical skills, ensuring that you leave with the confidence to face challenging engineering situations in modern industry.

100% of our Mechanical Engineering graduates from summer 2017 are in work or further study after graduating, according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) 2016-17 report. Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at DMU earned 98% student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2017, the second highest across all higher education institutes for this subject

Assessment methods

The course is taught by knowledgeable, experienced staff who are willing to help you gain a sound understanding of the engineering principles along with the personal skills that will enable you to study successfully and embark on a rewarding career.
A variety of techniques are used throughout the course with an emphasis on lectures, supporting tutorials and laboratory classes. Student-centred learning takes place through the research and presentation of findings, report writing, individual and group assignments and practical work-based exercises for the development of skills and understanding.
You will be exposed to industry-standard 3D design and FEA Analysis software and have access to computer and experimental laboratory facilities throughout the course.
You will normally attend around 12–16 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week, and are expected to undertake around 20 further hours of directed independent study and assignments as required.

We're short of engineers in a lot of areas and mechanical engineering is no exception. Mechanical engineers are in demand across multiple industries, with vehicle manufacturing most popular, with roles especially common in design and manufacturing. Other important sectors include aerospace, the oil and gas industry, consultancy and defence. Jobs are all around the country, with London, the Midlands, Scotland and the South East the most likely places for a new mechanical engineer to find work at the moment, and starting salaries are good. Although large employers are much the most likely place to get work, some of the most challenging, cutting edge jobs are with small niche engineering firms, so keep your eyes peeled if you want something a little different. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
