This degree prepares you for a fulfilling and rewarding career, focusing on specialist nursing care for children and young people who have a range of acute, long-term and complex healthcare needs.

You’ll combine theoretical study with clinical experience in a range of settings within the NHS, independent and voluntary sectors, and gain the knowledge to become a skilled communicator and a compassionate and open-minded nurse committed to delivering high-quality care to children.

Thanks to the long-standing reputation of our School of Nursing and Midwifery, established more than 50 years ago, you’ll benefit from a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as learn from accomplished academic staff with a variety of clinical expertise. And the support doesn’t stop there – while you’re on placement you will be guided, supervised and assessed by practice and academic staff.

You will also have the opportunity to work with students from other health and social care courses to deliver person-centred care and understand the impact of allied professions on the patient journey. Successful completion of the course prepares you to practise in the UK and overseas.

**From September 2020, all nursing degree students will receive at least £5,000 a year with up to £3,000 additional funding available.**

- Professionally accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Registered nurses can start on a salary of more than £24,907 (NHS pay scales 2019/20).

- Gain international experience related to your studies through our DMU Global programme, which has seen students take part in healthcare programmes in Peru, improve the health of communities in India and examine the social and health inequalities faced in America.

- You will study a range of topics including Foundations of Field of Practice, Influences on Wellbeing, Patient Journey, Managing Complexity in Nursing Practice and Consolidating Care and Professional Practice.

- Purpose-built facilities, including clinical skills suites, a moving and handling area, cardiopulmonary resuscitation room and a sensory room, allow you to apply theory to practice in a safe environment.

- Graduates are eligible to register with the NMC to practise in the NHS and private healthcare trusts, and apply for international employment. Further opportunities are available in community care, schools, medical charities and voluntary organisations.

YEAR ONE: Professional Responsibility 1; Skills and Evidence for Professional Practice; Foundations of Nursing Practice; Promotion of Health and Well-being; Holistic Nursing Interventions.

YEAR TWO: Professional Responsibility 2; Analysing Evidence for Healthcare; Complex Care Needs; Responding to Altered Health Needs; Contemporary Issues in Nursing.

YEAR THREE: Professional Responsibility 3; Dissertation; Working in Partnership with Service Users and Carers; Transitions to Professional Practice.

Assessment methods

Learning is supported by a strong system of personal tutors and teaching teams, clinical work placements and enthusiastic mentors. Teaching methods include: lectures, seminars, presentations, tutorials, enquiry-based problem solving and independent e-learning.

You will complete blocks of clinical placements 37.5 hours per week and blocks comprised of theory and independent learning hours up to an equivalent of 37.5 hours each week. Students in practice placements are allocated a mentor to help develop and support learning.

Practice is assessed through the completion of your practice portfolio, clinical skills log, submission of service user/ expert by experience feedback and undertaking the required number of hours in practice.

Theory is assessed through written assignments including as essays, reports, critical incident analysis, blog (weblog), examinations, and culminating in your dissertation.
