About this course
This Foundation Degree is designed to provide the opportunity to gain a Level 5 qualification and to work as a practitioner with children and young people in a variety of education and care settings. This programme will enable students to develop critical understanding and skills in relevant areas of education and care, including policies and issues. Students will develop their knowledge of theories underpinning children and young people’s learning and development.

The full-time programme will be as follows, studying 120 credits per year:
The full-time programme will be as follows, studying 120 credits per year: Year One Modules - 20 credits per module Social Construct of Children & Young people in Society & children’s Services. An introduction to ideological social constructs of the child & childhood, challenging the dominant ideas of childhood produced by society, ultimately having a positive impact on practice Professional Practice 1: Exploring Professionalism. Introduces students to the role of skills frameworks applicable to working within the Children and Young People’s Workforce (CYPW). Looking at key issues and policies as well as necessary skills and values transferable to academic study and future work within the CYPW. Children and Young People’s development: Introduction to Theories of Development. An introduction to classical and contemporary theories of development. It will explore a range of theories to enable understanding of the bio-psycho-social child within an ecological context. A range of theoretical perspectives will be introduced. Supporting Children and Young People’s Transitions. Explore Transitions, change and identity transformations in children’s lives from range of dimensions. The module considers the types of transitions children experience and the influence or impact on their lives Play Pedagogy, Risk and Resilience. Develops understanding of pedagogical approaches and models of resilience to support children to manage pressures and demands arising from both daily and significant life events. The module will consider models of resilience, policy, practice and government drivers for resilience and therapeutic interventions within your own practice. Children and Young People’s Development 2: Adverse Experiences of Children and Young People. The module introduces you to the broad range of difficulties experienced by many children and young people which have a adverse effects on their wellbeing. You will appreciate the support required for the wellbeing of children and young people Students studying part-time over 3 years will study the same modules as above but will study at the rate of 80 credits per year Work Placement Work-based learning forms an essential part of this Foundation Degree, either paid or voluntary. Such placements or employment would include: schools, pre-school organisations, children’s centres, care settings, youth services, special schools. Full-time students are required to attend work placement two days per week. Part-time students are required to attend one day per week.
