The Certificate in Education course, validated by University of East London, provides trainee teachers with the knowledge and practical skills to teach learners in the lifelong learning and skills sectors. The qualification is aimed at trainees who are already in a teaching position, or who wish to teach in further education, post-16, sector in colleges, academies and for private training providers.

The further education sector is dynamic, fast-paced and evolving. It’s an exciting time for teachers in this fulfilling profession. The Certificate in Education is a high-quality programme of initial training. Trainee teachers are equipped with the latest theory and practical skills to enable them to help their learners’ progress and achieve.

This course has a strong vocational focus and is taught in combination with your teaching commitments, including work-based mentoring and observations. With this focus, students gain a deeper appreciation of teaching methodology and their own specialism.

Upon completion students are able to teach in further education and apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

Students are expected to be in a teaching role throughout the course in order to gain the experience needed to complete their qualification. Students who do not have a current teaching role are responsible for finding their placement prior to the start of the course. You will require a mentor at your place of work who will instruct, observe and develop your skills.

Modules

Modules are taught at levels 4 and 5, and the qualification combines both.

Year 1 (Level 4)

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector: Reflective Practice, Classroom Craft and Planning
Learner Support in the Lifelong Learning Sector: Professional Values and Sector Context
Learning from Policy Context and Practice
Assessment and Feedback in Learning and Teaching
Each module in year one is worth 15 academic credits.

Year 2 (Level 5)

Active Enquiry
Portfolio of practice and Professional Learning
Each module in year two is worth 30 academic credits. Students take modules worth 30 credits per semester, 60 credits each year. The full qualification is worth 120 credits.

The overall outcome for the course is pass or fail.

Assessment methods

Assessment for learning takes place throughout the sessions and is designed to examine students’ understanding of the pedagogy and requirements of summative assignments. There will be formal, or summative, assessment at the end of each module. Assessment will be solely through a range of coursework assignments and formal teaching observations. The grades from these assignments will count towards your module mark. In addition to your module marks You will also be required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of practical teaching and pass eight formal lesson observations over the duration of the two-year course.

You will receive feedback on all observations and summative assessments within four weeks of your submission. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor.

You must pass all modules and lesson observations in order to complete the course and gain your qualification.
