**Foundation Year**

The Chemistry with Foundation Year will smooth your transition to degree-level study by giving you the time and space to develop your subject knowledge, improve your academic skills and build your confidence and self-belief that you can succeed at university. The programme is ideal for those who do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry onto an honours degree. Following successful completion (including any additional progression requirements) of the Foundation Year you can progress on to the first year of Chemistry.

**Start Dates**

We offer a September and January entry point onto this course. (Applicant information for January 2022 entry can be found on the 2021/2022 pages.)
The closing date for applications to the September 2022 entry point is the 15th January (unless otherwise stipulated) and the closing date for applications for the January 2023 entry point is the 20th December 2022. Please note that the January start point runs in a compressed time-frame (January to July) but without loss of teaching weeks or acceleration of teaching and content delivery. Please ensure that you are viewing the correct UCAS page for the entry point you are interested in. You can switch between the September and January UCAS pages by using the blue 'course options available' button above.

**Chemistry BSc (Hons)**

Our teaching and research explores a wide diversity of chemistry, helping you to develop subject knowledge and transferable skills in a supportive learning environment. You’ll develop a solid foundation of theory and practical skills, building to cover advanced concepts and contemporary issues in chemistry in later years.

On this course, you will learn to use chemistry in problem solving, and to present your theories and findings confidently and imaginatively. You will explore scientific instruments and techniques, and enjoy access to dedicated IT facilities. You also may have the opportunity to tailor your studies to reflect your interests, and learn how to pursue your own research.

This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Modules will be determined by your degree choice and point of entry (i.e. September or January). You will take a combination of subject-specific modules and study-skills modules which will provide you with a solid grounding in your subject area. Visit the website for a list of modules.

Chemistry graduates are in demand from a wide range of industries, from the food, oil, chemicals and pharmaceuticals to consultancy, technical analysis and teaching. They're also prized by business and finance employers for their research and data handling skills — anywhere there is research and data to be explained, you can find chemistry grads. If you want a career in research, you need a doctorate, so start planning now if you fancy one of these exciting and challenging jobs - but good students can usually get grants to take a doctorate, so don't worry about the financing if you think you have what it takes. The recession wasn’t too kind to chemists, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry (one of the key employers for chemists), but things are getting back to normal for this flexible group and it's one of the few degrees that is bucking the current trend and increasing graduate numbers.
