Do you enjoy working creatively and collaboratively? Do you want to build apps, websites and new products to solve real-world problems?

Our Computer Science course places a strong emphasis on the creative and soft skills that will enable you to thrive in a sector that is constantly evolving.

To respond to the growing demand for digital graduates with a blend of technical and transferable skills, we’ve designed our Computer Science degree in partnership with leading tech employers such as Sky and Infinity Works.

This four-year course includes an initial full-time Foundation Year and offers an alternative route into university and gaining a degree.

This route is for you if you do not have the necessary qualifications or don’t yet feel ready to begin degree-level study, or are returning to education and would like some support to get up to speed with learning in a university setting.

The Foundation Year in Computing will allow you to develop your academic skills and confidence as well as introduce you to key concepts, debates and skills that will support and inform your subsequent years of undergraduate study.

Following successful completion of your Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto Year 1 of our Computer Science BSc (Hons) degree.

Modules

Academic skills and studying with confidence: You’ll develop skills such as using electronic resources, planning and note-taking, communication skills related to essay and report writing and delivering presentations. You'll learn how to manage your time, how to prioritise and how to manage stress, and you'll become more confident in engaging with collaborative learning, debates, discussions and critical reflection. Project: You’ll study an area of interest related to your chosen future specialisation. You’ll work individually on your project (e.g., written report, presentation and oral examination, film, blogs) with feedback and support provided throughout, helping develop your self-confidence. Principles of Coding: With this module, you will learn the basic skills, general principles, concepts and rules of coding and apply them to design, development and testing of simple apps. You will also be introduced to the fundamentals of market-led design and take part in coding exercises and workshops to deliver a product for assessment. Principles of Web Development: With this module, you will focus on back-end web development, design and functionality through a series of workshops, producing code for a website using HTML, CSS or JavaScript. You will explore social media integration, data capture, cyber security and testing procedures with student-led demonstrations, before completing a project design brief for assessment.
