The Department of Computing and Mathematics has a reputation for academic excellence and you’ll learn from research-active staff working at the forefront of their specialist fields – well placed to support and guide you as you discover yours.

The foundation year provides a route onto a degree if you don't have the qualifications or have not studied advanced level subjects sufficiently related to your course of choice.

After successful completion of the foundation year in computing and mathematics, you can progress on to one of the relevant BSc (Hons) degrees.

Whichever route you take, you’ll have the skills and understanding you need to undertake further study or get started in your career.

**FEATURES AND BENEFITS**

- Provides a route onto your chosen degree course if you don't currently meet the entry requirements.

- Foundation years are designed to make undergraduate degrees more accessible to those who are under-represented in higher education, for example, those with non-traditional qualifications.

- Course content is tailored so that it is appropriate to your chosen degree.

- Helps you to develop the study skills and academic knowledge you will need to start Year 1 of your degree with confidence.

- You will be eligible to apply for student finance in the same way as other undergraduates.

- We are investing £115m to transform the way we teach and you learn in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Open from Autumn 2023, our new Dalton building will enhance collaboration between students, staff and industry, and provide new and improved teaching spaces.

Artificial intelligence is a very specialist subject taken by less than 100 people a year at the moment, so there is little reliable information available on graduate prospects - bear that in mind when you review the stats above. Graduates taking this type of subject are more likely than other computing graduates to go into further research. However, if you want to find out more specifically about the potential graduate outcomes of a specific course, it's a good idea to go on open days and talk to tutors about what previous graduates have gone on to do.

This is a newly-classified subject area for this kind of data, so we don’t currently have very much information to display or analyse yet. The subject is linked to important and growing computing industries, and over time we can expect more students to study them — there could be opportunities that open up for graduates in these subjects as the economy develops over the next few years.

This information comes from the National Student Survey, an annual student survey of final-year students. You can use this to see how satisfied students studying this subject area at this university, are (not the individual course).

This is the percentage of final-year students at this university who were "definitely" or "mostly" satisfied with their course. We've analysed this figure against other universities so you can see whether this is high, medium or low.

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?
