Course summary

What this course is about

UCAS code: L701

Here's what Manchester Metropolitan University says about its Geography course.

Our BSc (Hons) Geography degree brings together the study of human and physical geography, exploring how the planet works – from the forces shaping the earth’s surface to the complex connections between people, cultures, and places.

You’ll begin by exploring key geographical topics like, urban and cultural geography, and Earth’s dynamic systems including climate change and landscape development, while gaining essential skills in GIS and data analysis. As you progress, you’ll gain practical experience in research through fieldwork and in the laboratory, equipping you with the skills to address global challenges and pursue careers in geography and environmental management.

While our flagship Dalton building provides outstanding teaching facilities, some of the best learning happens beyond the classroom. Manchester is the ultimate "city laboratory", offering the opportunity to explore real-world geographical issues through local fieldwork and day trips across the North-West. You’ll also have the chance to take part in overseas field trips, further enhancing your practical skills and global perspective.

The course provides the opportunity to create a career action plan and complete a professional development programme. You could choose to spend an additional year studying abroad or working on a placement in industry. Carbon Literacy training is also embedded into our curriculum, equipping you with in-demand skills and knowledge to tackle global challenges.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • 100% of our research impact in Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences is world-leading or internationally excellent (Research Excellence Framework – REF – 2021).

  • We are ranked 5th for Research Impact, with this research informing our teaching in sustainability and climate change (REF 2021).

  • We are proud to be a top five university for sustainability since 2013 (People and Planet League 2025).

  • We’ve invested over £115 million to transform the way we teach and the way our students learn. The new Dalton building is equipped with dynamic learning spaces, world-class teaching and research facilities and collaborative study zones. This means you’ll graduate with the skills and experiences employers look for.

  • We offer free Carbon Literacy training in person and online to our students, to build understanding of sustainability and enhance employability.

  • Fieldwork opportunities in the UK or overseas are available during each year of the degree.

  • Our laboratories and facilities will give you first-hand experience of a wide range of manual and instrumental lab skills and techniques.

  • You can transfer to our four-year study abroad route which gives you the opportunity to study overseas during your third year in North America, Australia or in Europe, subject to availability.

  • You also have the opportunity to transfer to our four-year placement route, which offers the chance to spend your third year working on a placement with a relevant employer – gaining the skills and experience that can boost your career prospects.
