Mature applicants with relevant professional experience, lifeskills and/or qualifications are welcome to apply. Successful applicants may be required to attend an interview and manual dexterity test as part of the final selection process.

**This new Foundation Degree in Science (FdSc) in Dental Technology provides an opportunity to establish the skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to build a successful career as a dental technician. Currently, there is an increasing demand in the UK (and overseas) for skilled practitioners.**

**So what do Dental Technicians do?**

They design, manufacture, modify and repair custom-made dental appliances. These can improve the patient's appearance, speech or ability to eat. Typically, the work is undertaken in a dental laboratory on prescription from a qualified dentist. The work requires close attention to detail, colour matching and manual dexterity.

The Foundation Degree has been developed with input from industry and complies with the requirements of the UK regulatory body - the General Dental Council (GDC).

Students will be able to build up their competency in areas such as:

-Oral anatomy and physiology
-Biomaterial science,
-Dental appliance design and manufacture.

Other topics cover professionalism, ethics and legislation together with reflective skills and analytical decision making.

This course will be based at the college's new £58 million City Hub campus, near Nottingham train station. The campus opened in the Spring of 2021 and features state of the art teaching and learning facilities, science and dental technology laboratories, with a restaurant, cafe and performing arts venue.

**About the course**

The work of the Dental Technician can involve creating:

-crowns and bridges (items to be cemented in place)
-dentures, prosthetics or implants
-orthodontics (plastic/metal devices to straighten teeth - such as braces)

**First Year Modules may include**

-Oral Anatomy and Physiology and Basic Appliance Design
-Basic Dental Technology Techniques
-Introductory Dental Biomaterials Science
-Employment Practice A

**Second Year Modules may include**

-Dental Technology Techniques for Fixed Prosthodontics
-Preparing for Practice and Future Employment
-Dental Technology Techniques for Removable Prosthodontics
-Employment Practice B

**Assessment**

Course work is assessed continually through a variety of individual and group assignments: such as practical activities and investigations, research projects, written reports and presentations. Some modules include assessment by examination to help students prepare for further study.

**Your career and progression**

Career opportunities are available to graduates of this course in the NHS, commercial laboratories, private practices, dental manufacturing companies; or they could progress to further study with the option to top-up to a full BSc (Hons) in Dental Technology.

Alternative career options include the fields of: Clinical Dental Technology, Research and Development, Teaching and Education, Medical Sales.
