This course focuses on the inter-related field of sports coaching, development and sports science. You will be provided with unique opportunities to develop your coaching practice with our industry partners in real-working environments. The course combines scientific research modules and a specialist applied sports coaching module to allow you to gain academic, vocational and research skills required to work within this area. As part of your studies you’ll complete an academic research dissertation on a coaching related subject of your choice. You will undertake a work placement in your second year of study which will help prepare you for a career within the sports coaching sector. Previous placements have included working with community foundation teams, secondary P.E. departments, sports coaching within professional clubs as well as working with local authority sports development schemes. On completion of your course, you may progress to employment at supervisory level within the sports coaching industry. Previous graduates have secured employment with Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle City Council and Camp America. There is also the opportunity for further study with a PGCE or a Masters degree.

Assessment methods

You will learn through a variety of methods including lectures, seminars, practical sessions, workshops, guest speakers and visits, independent research and case-studies. Learning takes place in classrooms, lecture theatres and in our practical areas. Assessment is carried out through a range of methods including portfolios, work-based learning, assessments, reflective coaching diaries and research projects
