This is a combined honours course, where you study Fine Art alongside History of Art.

In Fine Art, we encourage you to be engaged, explore and to take risks as you work towards your independent fine art practice. You will make use of our excellent contemporary and traditional facilities to produce challenging modern artworks. We will introduce you to a range of practices that link traditional skills and approaches with alternative media such as sound, video and installation. You will develop imaginative and informed fine art practice and the ability to analyse and discuss contemporary art.

You will benefit from our relationships with contemporary galleries and arts organisations. These include:

By studying History of Art at Oxford Brookes, you’ll be exploring issues in a collaborative and dynamic environment. Your studies will include museum visits, walk-arounds and special talks from visiting experts from the likes of:
National Trust
Ashmolean
Modern Art Oxford
The V&A
Tate.

We are situated in the heart of a historic city, a mere stone’s throw from world-renowned museums and galleries.

Modules

In the Fine Art element of the course, what you study includes: In Year 1 you will be introduced to a range of technical skills, theoretical perspectives and creative strategies for generating and developing experimental contemporary artwork. Year 2 will further develop your technical skills to an advanced level. In Year 3 you will research and develop a body of independent visual work, which will culminate in an end-of-year degree show. In the History of Art element of the course, what you study includes: Year 1 has six modules covering skills, issues and debates in the history of art and architecture from the Renaissance through to the Modern period. Years 2 and 3 give your studies a period focus by offering options from the 15th to 20th centuries such as Oxford Buildings or Anthropology of Art. Year 2 also includes a study trip to Paris. Year 3’s dissertation module will allow you to work in depth on a topic of particular interest to you.

Quite a few students of fine art have already retired and are taking the degree for the excellent reason that they love art, and they're willing to pay to study it. You should bear this in mind if the stats you see feature particularly low employment rates. If you need to earn a living once you've finished your fine art degree, be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common - about one in six fine arts graduates were working for themselves. Also common are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once - and many courses actually help you prepare for freelancing. One in ten of last year’s fine arts graduates had more than one job six months after graduation — over twice the average for graduates from 2015. Graduates from these subjects are often found in arts jobs, as artists, designers, photographers and similar jobs, or as arts and entertainment officers or teachers — although it's perfectly possible to get jobs outside the arts if you wish, with jobs in events management, marketing and community work amongst the most popular options.
