Music

Create, develop and experiment with music that you’re passionate about. This flexible music degree is designed to centre around and cultivate your interests and ambitions.

This contemporary course will introduce you to music from practice to technology and history to theory. You’ll cover topics from classical to film music, popular music and beyond.

You can shape your course to reflect your interests. In your first year you'll study:
composition
performance
musicology
and recording.
You can then decide to specialise in a particular area or take a mixture of modules.

Knowledge of music technology and practical music-making is key for a 21st Century musician, so projects with sound-making and music technology form an integral part of the course. On this course you’ll gain experience in the music industry. A work placement in your second year and live projects for real clients will give you professional experience.

Our teaching is focused around ensuring that our students are able to explore and be ambitious with their musical talent and interests. Whether you’re pursuing grades or you’re self taught, this course will support you to gain the skills and knowledge you need to pursue music further.

Oxford Brookes is home to a variety of choirs, music groups and orchestras, so you’ll be part of a lively community which brings people together from across a diverse range of musical genres. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring base for studying music and has a culture rooted in music from classical to contemporary. So there are plenty of opportunities for you to take advantage of during your time studying with us.

On graduating you’ll be ready for a range of careers in composition, performance, music production, education and music teaching, and arts management. There are also postgraduate study and career opportunities beyond the music industry.
