Access to HE Diploma

M:15,P:30

Access - an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 15 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above, in a mathematics-related programme from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate

GCSE/National 4/National 5

English Language at grade C or 4 Maths at grade C or 4

This must include at least two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications (to include mathematics (or a mathematics-based subject) and at least one other subject from Physics, Physical Science, Engineering science, Computer Science, Chemistry, Electronics, other Mathematically-based science or technology subject) but excludes general studies. For example: BBC at A Level including relevant subjects. DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a relevant subject. A combination of qualifications which must include relevant subjects and may include AS levels and EPQ.

**Course summary:**
- Learn the underpinning science, maths and engineering principles to be a successful practitioner in the automotive industry.

- Gain an appreciation of the wider multidisciplinary engineering context.

- Understand the economic, environmental and social implications of automotive production.

- Become an expert in vehicle-specific systems and their safe operation.

Become a high-quality graduate engineer with specialist knowledge of automotive technology – as well as the professional and personal skills required for a successful career. Prepare to work in vehicle design, vehicle dynamic and control, product, manufacturing, testing, service, maintenance, R&D or other commercial engineering enterprises.

We also offer BEng Honours Automotive Engineering with Foundation Year where you study an initial foundation year to prepare for the course.

**How you learn:**
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.

You’ll experience and engage in a variety of learning activities as you progress through the course. We’ve designed a balanced mix of activities to help you build knowledge and understanding, while also developing your professional skills and employability. We use practical laboratories and computer simulations to enhance your learning – with lab experiments designed to reinforce your learning of theoretical concepts.

**Applied learning - Work placements**

You’ll have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career. Although optional (and competitive), a placement is actively encouraged to improve your employability at the end of the degree significantly.

**Competitions**

You’ll get the opportunity to take part in national and international engineering competitions, including:

- Formula Student – where you design and build a race car and race it at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix

- the Heavy Lift Challenge – which involves designing and building a remote-controlled aircraft

- Engineers Without Borders – a competition to find an engineering solution to a problem in the developing world

Graduates are in significant demand, so unemployment rates are well below the national graduate average and starting salaries are well above average. Much the most common industries for these graduates are now vehicle manufacture - there are not enough people with these degrees to go round and so the big employers tend to take the lion's share at the moment. But pretty much anywhere there is manufacturing, there are production engineers. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
