About this course
The BA (Hons) Degree in Early Childhood Education is run at Carshalton College and is validated by the University of Roehampton. Like many degrees, this course is a mixture of College taught elements and research-based learning. The taught components of the programme are designed to run over one year. The course offers a framework providing individuals working in the early years sector with a training programme that will increase their theoretical and statutory knowledge and understanding as well as employability skills. On successful completion of the programme students will have accumulated 360 HE points (240 at level 4 and 5 and 120 at Level 6). This will enable students to apply for Initial Teacher Training or EYTS and many other academic and professional progression routes including Masters level degrees.
It is a requirement of the programme that all participants will be working in an early years setting or participate in a meaningful placement of not less than twelve hours per week. A significant proportion of the programme is work-based with students completing modules at work with the support of college staff. This model of full-time learning at work and academic study allows students to remain in employment while completing their qualification. This programme is delivered according to current University of Roehampton regulations for undergraduate degrees. In order to achieve the qualification students must achieve a pass mark (40%) in all elements of the modular assessments.
Modules
Perspectives of Early Childhood Curricula and Frameworks (20 credits). This module is designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of curricula and frameworks as a social construct emergent from social and political expectations. They will consider the broad perspective of education delivery in England and internationally, the function that a statutory curricula and framework performs in relation to implementing the educational philosophy of a country. Students will examine the impact of governmental influences on content, delivery and assessment within the regulatory framework.
Values, Leadership and Management in Early years Settings (20 credits). This module focuses on the importance of the ability to lead and manage teamwork in early childhood education provision. The module examines theoretical frameworks of leadership and management that are underpinned by core values. It aims to develop effective leaders and managers who within their role act as advocates for the young child and promote the continued development of high-quality provision.
Contemporary Issues in Child Health (20 credits). This module is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the importance of promoting child health and how this can impact on the child’s learning and development. It aims to develop a growing knowledge base of health-related issues and their management including the management of complex health needs in early years provision. Students will gain a clear understanding of their responsibilities to the child and its family within the legislative framework.
Dissertation (60 credits). This module focuses on the importance of the ability to plan a research project having due regard to ethical principles, time management, systematic analysis of data, sustained argument and a synthesised conclusion and recommendations. The module aims for students to plan and conduct ethical research within the student’s workplace or within the general field of education, with supervision: this may be practical or theoretical.
Assessment methods
The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Assessment methods include a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major Dissertation project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. All assessment is spread across the year to make the workload manageable. The course work will be based on the following modules and assessments.
