Polish language

The four-year BA Polish and Spanish is a joint honours programme split equally between your two languages. You will take modules not only in language (speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation) but also in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, politics and other relevant field designed to complement your language learning. With a wide variety of modules on offer, you will be able to tailor your modern languages degree to your areas of interest.
You will spend a Year Abroad in the third year, split between two countries where your languages are spoken.
Data from the 2011 census reveals that over half a million people in England and Wales speak Polish. This makes Polish England's second language! Poland, with nearly 39 million citizens, is an increasingly important actor on the world economic and political stage. Studying Polish at SSEES (UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies) offers the opportunity to gain excellent language skills and a profound knowledge of Polish literature, history and culture that will prepare you for a wide variety of careers in Europe.

Studying Spanish at UCL as part of the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Department combines the study of Spanish language and its varieties, with modules in the literature, film, history and cultures of Spain and Latin America, from the early modern period to the present day. For the Year Abroad we have links with leading universities in Spain and Latin America.

It's often said there's a shortage of modern language graduates, and graduates from Spanish courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. In 2015, nearly 1300 UK graduates got degrees in Spanish and the subject is seeing its popularity increase. About one in five got jobs overseas — often as English teachers. If you want to put your degree to work in the UK, teacher training is a common option, and businesses see Spanish-speaking countries as important markets, leading to graduate opportunities in marketing, human resources, sales and project management.
