Our Sport Management programme will attract applicants who have ambitions to develop a successful managerial career in sport, leisure and recreation industries.

The importance of sport and recreation in all areas of life is now recognised not only in terms of our health and well-being, but also as a highly profitable business sector.

This programme aims to:

• provide you with the knowledge and skills to develop the critical understanding and professional knowledge to take up a managerial position in the ever-expanding sport and activity industry.

• develop rounded graduates equipped to manage effectively with the knowledge of contemporary issues and challenges associated with modern sport.

• provide detailed knowledge and understanding of developing and delivering community sport and activity.

• develop and manage appropriate structures and environments for elite sport.

• ensure graduates can operate as credible and high integrity professionals in the contemporary sports industry, able to tackle new challenges as they emerge.

• provide a detailed understanding of the challenges and opportunities of working with information systems and the human aspects of systems.

In addition, this course will:

• Equip graduates with the critical thinking and academic skills necessary to undertake research, develop advanced practice and progress to postgraduate study.

• provide a focus on character and personal development with specific attention to cognitive, emotional and social intelligence and awareness of physical and mental well-being to develop graduates as resilient problem solvers, reflective practitioners, effective communicators and lifelong learners.

Your UA92 degree goes far beyond the traditional academic experience.

Each academic year, in addition to your four subject modules, you’ll study an extra credit-bearing module, which focuses entirely on character and personal development. You’ll get to take on a real-life project, based on a live scenario, set by one of our industry partners.

You’ll experience first-hand the current issues facing the industry, get the opportunity to apply your subject knowledge, challenge your perspectives, step outside your comfort zone and build key employability skills to prepare you for your future career.

These experiences are instrumental in developing transferable skills and key competencies such as leadership, resilience and well-being, communication, problem-solving and team-working. To help you track your progress and further refine your developing skill-set, you’ll meet regularly with your own personal development coach throughout years 1 & 2.

The modules you will study

Our industry-led approach means our leading partner organisations are integral to the UA92 experience; co-developing course curriculums and providing unique experiences for our students. The accelerated programme will consist of 12 modules studied across the 2 years. You will study 6 modules each year, studying modules at level 4 and 5 in year one, and levels 5 and 6 in year two. The specific level 5 modules will change according to your year of entry.

Year 1 (Level 4) Management and Organisations You’ll explore the business environment; understanding the internal and external forces that impact on organisations, the historical and contemporary issues affecting the management of people in organisations and the skills and attributes required to become an effective leader.

Introduction to Sports Management and Marketing You’ll examine a range of concepts and theories related to sport and the provision of sport in the UK. You’ll cover a diverse range of topics such as the role of marketing and responsible management in the sports environment.

Sports Finance and Economics You’ll cover the basics of business finance and the economics of professional team sports. This module will help you develop the fundamental knowledge and skills you need to become familiar with sports financial management, specifically the financial statements and economic factors within professional team sports.

Introduction to Sports Events Management You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of what it takes to organise, manage and deliver memorable and successful sports events; covering event design, development and practical fundamentals as well as managing the health, safety and security of all stakeholders.

Year 2 (Level 5) Sports Operations Management You’ll study the Operations Management frameworks and techniques used to proactively develop strategies in order to design, plan, and control operations and explore ways to improve business performance.

Sport Law and Ethics You’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of the legal, ethical and regulatory constraints that exist within the sports industry. Focusing on a UK context, you’ll explore some of the key tensions that determine the media coverage of events and get to grips with relevant laws, regulations and professional codes of conduct.

Sports Business Analytics An introduction to evidence-based and data-driven decision making and strategy formulation. You’ll examine methods and approaches widely used by sports organisations in collecting, analysing and utilising data on sports customers, participants, fans, spectators and viewers.

Sports Policy and Development You will gain an understanding of the governmental and institutional structures supporting or influencing the sports industry and the different settings in which managers may operate.

Year 3 (Level 6) Strategic Leadership You’ll develop a critical understanding of the evolution of leadership theory, its function in contemporary business environments, the role and responsibilities of a business leader and the organisational principles that contribute to contemporary business leadership issues.

Sports Governance You’ll take a look at the challenges associated with commercial development, address the global challenges of governance on multi-stakeholder organisational interest in sport, with an emphasis on the International Sports Governance and legal frameworks.

New Trends in Sports Business Management You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of new trends in global sports. You’ll explore the key issues, approaches and challenges related to emerging trends within sports business and management.

Sports Business Challenge In this module, you’ll get the chance to apply your knowledge of sports management to real-world sports business cases. You will use the techniques and skills you have learnt over the course to perform an evaluation and communicate results. has context menu

How you will be assessed

No traditional end-of-year exams You are assessed within each subject module – so you learn it, then you prove it.

Assessment methods include individual and group work which is undertaken in a range of formats related to your subject. This may include writing an essay or producing a report, presenting findings or creating audio/visual projects. Practical assessment is favoured where possible, for example, Media and Communication students producing a Podcast, or Sports Coaching students running a coaching session. You’ll have the opportunity to learn, develop and demonstrate a wide range of practical and applied skills and competencies.
