Course summary

What this course is about

UCAS code: BSTI

Here's what University Centre South Devon says about its Social and Therapeutic Interventions (Top-Up) course.

This programme has been designed to help students understand how the theoretical concepts they learned at level 4 and 5, can be applied to create wellbeing, support and equality interventions in practice. It draws on concepts from psychology, sociology, criminology, philosophy and education to critically consider ways of working that will create positive, inclusive outcomes and support future generations.

The programme aims to:

  • Build on students’ varied Level 4 and 5 studies to develop their knowledge and understanding of the interrelated and complex factors that impact on people’s wellbeing and experience of the social world.

  • Develop students’ ability to apply social science and counselling theories to explain and address personal and social issues.

  • Prepare students to work flexibly, effectively and compassionately with vulnerable groups, individuals, colleagues and other professionals, through careful reflection and critical exploration of research, evidence practice-based experience, individual cases, contexts, and policy.

  • Enable students to develop as active and critically conscious life-long learners, with a sound understanding of the relationship between theoretical frameworks and empirical methods of enquiry, which inform the development, interpretation and continuing re-evaluation of theory and professional practice
