About this course
If you believe that all children have the right to be taught by an inspirational, knowledgeable, creative and caring teacher, then this is the course for you.
Our course covers all aspects of inclusion and social justice but the main focus is on teaching those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
It will prepare you to be a reflective, effective teacher, able to meet the learning needs of pupils in the Primary age range, including those who experience barriers in their learning.

You’ll be living in a vibrant student city by the spectacular North West coastline, within an hour of the Lake District National Park and the big cities of Manchester and Liverpool. So, whether you want lively or leisurely, you’re within reach of both.
For a course that’ll springboard your teaching career helping the learning needs of pupils, this course is for you.
You will follow two main strands in the course, the Inclusion specialism and professional teaching studies, that come together in your placement experiences.
The specialism includes modules that introduce key issues in SEND and Inclusion. You will study modules on the philosophy of SEND/Inclusion, barriers to learning, SEND policy and practice, Inclusive teaching and contextualised learning. In the fourth year of the course, you will prepare a dissertation on an aspect of SEND/Inclusion of your choice. In your final semester, you will have the opportunity to enhance your BA (Honours) Degree by completing three modules at Masters level on working with adults, marginalised children and evidence based practice.
The second strand, professional teaching studies, will provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to deliver the Primary Curriculum. There is a necessary focus on the teaching of English, including Reading, and Mathematics but you will also explore key themes in teaching and learning in the full range of subjects met in the Primary classroom.
We will prepare you to be a reflective, effective teacher, able to meet the learning needs of pupils in the Primary age range including those who experience barriers in their learning, helping you to understand the principles of including all children. You will become immersed in an active learning culture that encourages debate, to allow you to develop an enquiring and contested approach to issues connected to SEND/Inclusion. Your placement experience will focus on practice in mainstream settings, but you will have the opportunity to choose up to two Special Education placements during the course, to further broaden and enhance your learning.

We prepare you to teach a wide range of children whose needs may be very different and help you to understand the underlying principles and contentions in the area of inclusion.The modules offered reflect the many issues, including barriers to learning, differing philosophies and classroom practice.
