Overview

The world is more interconnected than ever before, driving urgent global challenges such as food insecurity, conflict, social justice and the environmental crisis. Now, more than ever, there’s a need for geographers with a truly global perspective. Our BA in Geography and Global Development with a Year Abroad prepares you to think globally and work towards a just and sustainable future.

You’ll study critical contemporary issues from a geographical perspective – including poverty, race, gender, health, migration, the environment, artificial intelligence and cities – with a focus on the relationship between people, place, and transformative social justice. You’ll gain key practical skills, including the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), cross-cultural communication, policy analysis, problem-solving, and fieldwork skills. You can also develop your understanding of specific regions of the world, such as sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America.

Local fieldwork is a vital part of all core modules, complemented by exciting residential field trips in Europe and the UK. In your third year you’ll have the rewarding opportunity to learn at one of our many partner universities around the world, studying modules that complement your studies at UEA. In recent years, students have gone to universities in Ghana, Mexico, Japan, and Australia, amongst many others.

UEA is the ideal place to study for a BA in Geography and Global Development. We’ve been rated 1st in the UK for research quality in both Development Studies (REF 2021) and Geography and Environmental Science (Complete University Guide 2025). A degree in Geography and Global Development will prepare you for an exciting and rewarding career in a range of sectors including tourism, urban and regional planning, environmental sustainability, law, government, NGOs, and more. According to the Royal Geographical Society, geography graduates have the joint highest employment rates amongst social scientists and command some of the highest salaries.

Overall id say that the inversity is okay, the course is good however the lectuerers arent the best and often times lectures feel quite pointless. Things cost a lot here too, with the laundrette and shop being very overpriced making it hard to budget money easily. However, the camous looks quite nic...

Uni life is very fun. You get to spend time with your friends and they're always there so you don't get bored. Norwich is a very average city but again you get used to it and it's also very historic

The student union are there all the time and are very supportive. They practically run the university and make it seem amazing. They run events almost every day and week and make the uni thrive.

Accommodation is definitely good and like a hotel. The library is open 24/7 and the campus kitchen has very good food. My room is amazing I opted for en suite room which is better than others. We share a kitchen which is ok as it can get dirty quickly. But other than that all is good
