Subject

Medical genetics

Genetics is at the heart of modern developmental sciences. The drive to understand more about the processes behind inherited diseases has led to huge advances in many fields, including embryology, stem cell biology and cancer research. On this course, you’ll learn about genetics across the board, from the foundations right up to the most recent breakthroughs. It’s a course designed to help you kickstart your career in a wide range of healthcare and scientific professions, pharmaceuticals, genetic counselling, or medical research.

You’ll gain a firm foundational knowledge on the application of genetics to medical and biological sciences research. In addition to learning theory, you’ll gain practical hands-on experience in the labs in our new £18.2 million facilities.

Benefit, also, from gaining real-world experience by participating in a compulsory and supervised research placement in your area of interest, available after your second year, allowing you to put your skills to the test at sites in the UK or abroad.

**Why Study Medical Genetics with Research Placement BSc(Hons) at University of Huddersfield?**
You’ll be learning from the best, as the University of Huddersfield has been rated Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023. Not only that, but our teaching staff rank in the top three in England for the proportion who hold doctorates (HESA 2022).

**Professional Bodies**
This course has advanced accreditation by the Royal Society of Biology and accreditation is reviewed on a regular basis. As a student on this course, you’ll be able to apply for undergraduate membership of the Biochemical Society and The Physiological Society (UK). You’ll also be eligible for student affiliate membership of the Royal Society of Biology and upon successful graduation be eligible to apply for one year associate membership, this can help open up networks at a crucial time when applying for jobs.

**Why Huddersfield?**
Huddersfield’s vibrant and friendly campus is a great place from which to study, while the town itself offers lots to see and do, with good transport links in and around the area.

Modules

Year 1 modules include:
• Molecular and Cellular Biology
• Biochemistry 1
• Chemical and Physical Principles of Biology
• Physiology 1: Structure and Function
• The World of Microbes
• Research Skills.

To see the full range of modules and descriptions, please visit our website. A link to this course can be found at the bottom of the page in the ‘Course contact details’ section.

Assessment methods

Year 1 shares modules with our other biological sciences courses and lays the foundation for your study of advanced topics such as molecular evolution in Year 2 and applied molecular genetics in the final year.

You’ll be taught through a series of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory work. Assessment will include written exams, multiple choice questions, oral presentations, and assessment of laboratory skills. The final year research project contributes to your degree classification.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Only a few hundred people take genetics courses every year and graduates from these courses are amongst the most likely to go on to do a doctorate when they graduate, as that's the level of qualification you need to go into a career in research in this important and fast-moving field. Lab jobs were the most popular outcome for genetics graduates, but whilst other science and technical occupations were also common, you could also find genetics graduates in a range of other roles, particularly business and finance.

What about your long term prospects?

Looking further ahead, below is a rough guide for what graduates went on to earn.

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.
