Following completion of this course, you could make a real difference to the lives of those with special educational needs and disabilities.

You’ll learn from professionals with a wealth of experience in a range of educational and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) contexts, benefiting from the opportunity to reflect on how your learning can be applied to practice, with placements in different settings.

As you can tailor your work placement to suit your interests within the subject, you’ll be better equipped to secure a post-University role which makes best use of your skills and experience.

On this course, you’ll also examine how policy and legislation have contributed to our understanding of children and young people with SEND.

Assessment methods

You’ll be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and interactive workshops. On average, 24.5 per cent† of the study time on the course is spent with your tutors (either face to face or online) in lectures, seminars, tutorials etc. You’ll also have a personal tutor who’ll be assigned to you throughout your degree to support your ongoing wellbeing.

You study four modules each year. These place an emphasis on work-based practice, plus theory and policy. We’ll help you to develop your skills as a reflective practitioner and to improve your academic ability.

You’ll be encouraged to develop your own interests by choosing an option module in Year 3 and will learn strategies and methodologies to undertake research in-line with ethical practice.

Assessments vary and include essays, academic discussions and presentations, amongst others.

When you look at employment stats, bear in mind that a lot of students are already working in education when they take this type of course and are studying to help their career development. This means they already have jobs when they start their course, and a lot of graduates continue to study, whilst working, when they complete their courses. We have quite a lot of sociology graduates, although numbers fell last year. But graduates still do pretty well. Most sociology graduates go straight into work when they complete their degrees, and a lot of graduates go into jobs in social professions such as recruitment, education, community and youth work, and housing. An important option for a sociology graduate is social work - and we're short of people willing to take this challenging but rewarding career. Sociology is a flexible degree and you can find graduates from the subject in pretty much every reasonable job — obviously, you don't find many doctors or engineers, but you do find them in finance, the media, healthcare, marketing and even IT. Sociology graduates taking further study often branch out into other qualifications, like teaching, law, psychology, HR and even maths, so don’t think a sociology degree restricts you to just one set of options.
