The BSc (Hons) Business Management with Marketing with Placement Year is aimed at students who have an interest in developing knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of business management and marketing, and in particular, who are looking to pursue a career in business management and marketing. It seeks to give students a learning experience that allows them to develop proficiencies that create effective managerial behaviour in different organisations in today’s changing business environment. The curriculum and learning and teaching strategy are complemented by guest lectures and ‘live’ workshops to promote independent learning and increasing their employability skills for the future.

Year 1 provides you with a good understanding of the foundations of business alongside the fundamentals of marketing. Years 2 and 3 gives you a thorough grounding in the more specialist concepts and applications of marketing management. The programme provides the intellectual underpinnings required for a career in a rapidly changing work environment, a rigorous approach to self-awareness and personal development and a significant exposure to the world of work and its current demands through work experience opportunities.

The degree is ideal for those interested in a future career in Business or Marketing. The programme offers students a thorough grounding in business and the more specialist concepts and applications of marketing management. Students will be exposed to the relational nature of marketing, the primacy of customers in the digital world, how strategic marketing works, and how marketing communications can aid the success of the organization in the international context. Students will have an opportunity to qualify for the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership (5D1V2) or the Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management (5C1V2) dependent on successful completion of modules which are mapped to one of these CMI awards.

The emphasis in the course design has been to provide this strong business degree with a focus on employability. The course offers an excellent grounding in knowledge of the key aspects of business management that are covered by a range of modules from the Management and Marketing subject area. In turn, the degree seeks to inculcate in students many of the skills and competences in research, presentation, critical analysis, problem solving, team building and entrepreneurship, which all together should be helpful for future employment opportunities.

Students who select to undertake a placement year in industry will spend the penultimate year of their BSc programme working for an organisation under academic supervision. This supervised work placement will connect them with the employment market.

Assessment methods

Assessment is designed to meet the programme and module learning outcomes both academically and professionally in formative form including the preparation and feedback from seminars, workshops, tests and presentations, as well as in summative assessments that contributes to the grade, including individual coursework, group work, projects, in-class presentations, and exams. In particular, as is usual in the sector, this programme involves a considerable amount of group work and group assessment, i.e., as much as 50% of the assessment on selected modules may take this form.
