Are you a Canadian university finalist or graduate? This accelerated degree is designed just for you, and will help you complete your legal education in just two years.

Our two-year accelerated qualifying law degree is tailored to the needs of Canadian university graduates. You will develop your legal reasoning and problem solving skills whilst learning to apply both English and Canadian law in its context. By studying ‘Foundations of Canadian Law’ and ‘Canadian Constitutional Law’, you will be equipped with a critical understanding of Canadian law, as well as prepared for the Canadian National Committee on Accreditation exams. This degree is recognised in England and Canada and will provide an excellent foundation to pursue a legal career in either country.

Our student-run Canadian Law Society will not only support you during your time with us, but also provide you with a wealth of opportunities to enhance your prospects as a law graduate. With more than ten years' experience supporting students on their transition to a legal career in Canada, we have the expertise to get you to where you want to go.

Modules

In your first year you will learn about the fundamental principles of the English legal system and study three of the seven foundational law subjects. You will also be introduced to the Canadian legal and governmental systems and the role of law in Canadian society. You will begin to build upon the academic skills acquired during your previous degree, as well as develop your legal reasoning. In your final year, you will complete your study of the seven foundation subjects, broadening your understanding of the English legal system and learning about the law of the European Union. You will study the Canadian Constitution and be introduced to its application in Canadian legal practice.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods are varied. They can include assessed essays/coursework, exams and multiple choice question papers. Professional legal writing - for example, writing a letter of advice to a client - is also built into our curriculum and you will start developing these practical skills from your very first year with us.

Law graduates tend to go into the legal industry, and they usually take similar routes. Jobs are competitive — often very competitive - but starting salaries are good and high fliers can earn serious money - starting on over £24k in London on average. Be aware though - some careers, especially as barristers, can take a while to get into, and the industry is changing as the Internet, automation and economic change all have an effect, If you want to qualify to practise law, you need to take a professional qualification — many law graduates then go on to law school. If you want to go into work, then a lot of law graduates take trainee or paralegal roles and some do leave the law altogether, often for jobs in management, finance and the police force. A small proportion of law graduates also move into another field for further study. Management, accountancy and teaching are all popular for these career changers, so if you do take a law degree and decide it’s not for you, there are options.
