About this course
Risk and uncertainty are where actuaries shine – drawing on their mathematical skills to help businesses and organisation make better financial decisions. It can be a high-stakes role, but we’ll give you the confidence to carve out an exciting career.
This Mathematics and Actuarial Science BSc combines two important, related subjects.
Actuarial science is the study of risk and uncertainty, usually of a financial and long-term nature. Professionals who work in this industry are called actuaries, and it’s a career that’s regularly voted as a top three choice in job rankings. The strong intellectual challenges combined with the expected financial rewards make this a highly sought-after profession.
Mathematics is one of the most fascinating and intellectually challenging subjects you can study. The School of Mathematics and Actuarial Science at the University of Leicester is home to an enthusiastic group of mathematicians, both staff and students.
On this course you will become comfortable with data and with its manipulation. You will also develop great team working skills and persuasive communication techniques. Crucially, you will be in a position to know why you are in an organisation and what you can contribute.
Completing this degree can lead to you obtaining exemptions from the first tier of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' exams, alongside a wide range of related skills which will enable you to add value in many areas for your future employers.
Leicester has fully embedded the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' Curriculum 2019 syllabus into our Actuarial courses. This means we integrate more business-focused knowledge and skills, such as data science and predictive analytics, as well as focusing more keenly on the development of personal and professional competencies. With the added benefit of an optional year in industry, this will help you become more work-ready in a competitive environment.

Top job areas of graduates
Over 2,000 students graduated with a degree in finance in 2015, and a sign of the strength of the finance industry, numbers are on the up. Over half of finance graduates go into the finance industry, with accountancy and financial advice roles particularly popular. It's also quite common for finance graduates to go into jobs which require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications — finance graduates who take further study are more likely to be studying accountancy than finance. About a third of graduates start their careers in London - but Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham are other popular locations for finance graduates to work.

Top job areas of graduates
Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
