Midwifery

There aren’t too many jobs as rewarding as midwifery. But this four-year degree goes one step further. Alongside gaining core midwifery skills and experience, you’ll also discover what it takes to be a clinical and professional leader within the industry.

The NHS needs midwives. Midwives work in a range of roles and settings which need effective leadership. Only one university offers a pre-registration midwifery Masters degree with an integrated leadership component - Leicester.

We have partnered with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) to deliver this course. This degree draws on more than 40 years of health education as well as the expertise of our School of Allied Health Professions and our School of Business.

This degree puts leadership at the heart of the curriculum. Throughout your degree you will not only be mentored by experienced clinical midwives to learn the fundamental midwifery skills, but also by experienced leaders in the NHS and the wider midwifery profession.

You will spend over 50% of your time on placements working alongside experienced midwives and the multi-professional team. You will be supported in developing your knowledge, skills and professional values to become a safe, competent and confident midwife.

This Masters degree lasts four years, at the end of which there will be employment opportunities as a midwife in the local NHS.

All modules ensure that students are able to function safely, competently and effectively in the core areas of midwifery practice immediately upon completion of the programme and successful professional registration with the NMC. Assessment methods

In university-based teaching there is a balanced mixture of lectures, clinical skills teaching and inter-professional group work. At least 50% of the course will be based in maternity placements, building your professional knowledge, skills and attitudes over the four years. In each academic year there is an opportunity to learn alongside other healthcare students supported by experienced academic lecturer-practitioners and clinically qualified staff. Your iPad will support your learning throughout, including supporting you in organising your own self-directed study.

The four leadership modules that are an integrated component of the programme will enable you to develop your own leadership knowledge and skills facilitated by leadership learning sets. As part of the leadership modules, you will develop a leadership portfolio that will be part of your long-term career map, which will underpin your accelerated career trajectory. You will prepare for professional practice, focussing on the knowledge and skills required for lifelong learning and professional practice, including specific interview preparation, presentation skills and numeric skills.

You will develop the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility, and decision-making in complex and unpredictable circumstances. This will be fostered by reflection and the internalisation of professional values. A system of Personal Development Planning is essential to engage and support the student in developing these skills.
