Effective and efficient leadership is crucial to the smooth running of children’s healthcare. On this four-year degree, alongside gaining core paediatric nursing skills and experience, you’ll discover what it takes to be a clinical and professional leader within the profession.

The NHS needs nurses, nurses work in teams - and those teams need effective leadership. Only one university offers a pre-registration nursing degree with an integrated leadership component: Leicester.

We have partnered with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) to deliver this course. Our degrees draw on more than 40 years of health education as well as the expertise of our School of Business.

Our degrees put leadership at the heart of the curriculum. Throughout your degree you will be offered mentoring by experienced leaders in the nursing profession and the wider NHS.

You’ll also have the opportunity to get hands-on experience. You will spend at least 50% of your time on placements, working alongside experienced nursing and medical staff.

This degree lasts four years, at the end of which you will have the security of employment opportunities in the local NHS.

Modules

The first year of the course, which is common to both our Nursing degrees, introduces fundamental knowledge required to be a nurse and a leader of the profession. You will gain knowledge and skills that are key to nursing care which will underpin your learning in years two, three and four. You will be introduced to both core theory and clinical skills.

Assessment methods

In university-based teaching there is a balanced mixture of lectures, clinical skills teaching and inter-professional group work. At least 50% of the course will be based in nursing placements, building your professional knowledge, skills and attitudes over the four years. In each academic year there is an opportunity to learn alongside other healthcare students supported by experienced academic lecturer-practitioners and clinically qualified staff. Your iPad will support your learning throughout, including supporting you in organising your own self-directed study.

The four leadership modules that are an integrated component of the programme will enable you to develop your own leadership knowledge and skills facilitated by leadership learning sets. As part of the leadership modules, you will develop a leadership portfolio that will be part of your long-term career map, which will underpin your accelerated career trajectory. You will prepare for professional practice, focussing on the knowledge and skills required for lifelong learning and professional practice, including specific interview preparation, presentation skills and numeric skills.

You will develop the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility, and decision-making in complex and unpredictable circumstances. This will be fostered by reflection and the internalisation of professional values. A system of Personal Development Planning is essential to engage and support the student in developing these skills.

All modules ensure that students are able to function safely, competently and effectively in the core areas of nursing practice immediately upon completion of the programme and successful professional registration with the NMC. The programme enables graduates to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to sustain their continuing professional development and lifelong learning throughout their careers.
