Archaeology

How do human societies develop, and what lessons can we learn to protect our future? Geography and archaeology are natural partners for exploring these issues. You will develop theoretical perspectives, with scientific applications.

You will study the relationship between people, landscape and the changing environment. The time span is from the origins of early humans to the present day. Choose your modules to specialise, or maintain a breadth of interests.

Your technical training in geography includes:

- cartography

- statistical techniques

- computing

Your skills training in archaeology includes:

- archaeological and research methods

- environmental archaeology

- ancient technologies

- the history of archaeological thought

This course includes 10 days of archaeological fieldwork. You will participate in an approved excavation project, or a related placement, in the UK or overseas. Your technical training will include cartography, statistical techniques and computing.

As a joint honours student, you will benefit from skills development and assessment methods from both subjects. Mostly, each subject is taught separately, but you will find uniting themes.

No prior experience of archaeology is required.

Modules

During year one, you are introduced to the academic disciplines of archaeology and geography through a series of methodological, practical, thematic and period-based modules. You’ll normally take 50% of modules in archaeology and 50% in geography. It is also compulsory to complete 10 days of archaeological fieldwork or professional experience, normally conducted in the summer vacations at the end of the first and second years. In year two, you’ll take a further range of compulsory and optional modules in both disciplines, again with 50% normally being taken in each. In your final year, a dissertation or extended essay in either geography or archaeology forms the remaining compulsory element of the course, in addition to a wide range of optional advanced modules in both disciplines.

Want to do a job in the arts - with lots of the great outdoors? Try archaeology! There don't tend to be many archaeology undergraduates out there (just under 700 graduated in 2015) - but it's quite a popular subject at postgraduate level. In fact, over a quarter of archaeology graduates take some kind of further study when they graduate - usually more study of archaeology. When you look at the stats, be aware that junior jobs in archaeology are not always well paid at the start of your career, and that temporary contracts are not uncommon. Thankfully, though, unpaid work, whilst not completely gone, is less common than it used to be. The archaeology graduates of 2015 found jobs in archaeology, of course, but also management and heritage and environment work, as well as more conventional graduate jobs in marketing and the finance industry.
